Business Productivity in Action | Allyis Blog

At its core, SharePoint 2010 is a business productivity platform. In simple terms, that means it ought to make individual workers and teams more productive, leading to increased revenue and/or decreased cost, and therefore enabling businesses to improve their overall performance as a result of their investment in SharePoint. Sounds ambitious, doesn?t it? Some of the benefits of SharePoint are difficult to measure because when real adoption of SharePoint occurs within an organization people tend to use it to solve many different problems across many different scenarios, and these aren?t always easy to differentiate. In other words, it becomes part of how people work rather than a tool to solve a specific problem. That said, when you can isolate a specific problem and compare the before and after scenarios, you can see a direct impact on productivity.

As an example, let?s talk about a specific scenario where SharePoint can have a major impact: contract management. The challenges of contract management for a sales-driven organization (and hence the problems SharePoint could help solve) include the following:

  • Contracts usually need to be approved by at least one person, and there needs to be an easily referenced record of approval.
  • Contracts and supporting documentation need to be retained and easily discovered later for internal reference as well as for external audits.
  • There is a huge cost (both in terms of expense and opportunity cost) of having your sales team spend a lot of time creating, managing, and searching for this documentation.

For all of the reasons above, email is a terrible solution to this problem. What is needed is a business process that enforces documentation standards, captures all of the key information needed to understand the contract, manages the approval workflow, and makes everything easy to find days, months, or even years later. Here are some ways that SharePoint can enable that business process:

  • Documentation standards, enforced by document templates, created directly within a centralized document library
  • Workflows that move decisions and information out of email, enable managers to review and approve contracts, and provide access to supporting documentation, including estimates, relevant emails, and previous contracts or change orders
  • Document Libraries that include simple but robust tagging based on document type and Views that enable people to see only the documents that are relevant to them based on role, time period, customer, or a number of other factors

Our own experience with a solution like this has enabled our sales people to spend roughly 5-10% more time doing what moves the business forward, not searching for old documentation in email or saved on their hard drives. It has also enabled us to reach consistency in our contract terms, leaving us at less risk in the event of an audit. Bottom line, we are spending less time on administrative tasks, while at the same time reducing financial risk and freeing up time to focus on growing the business.

That?s what business productivity means.

London -- Russians born during the Leningrad Siege in World War II, which was responsible for some of the greatest losses of civilian life in history, are giving scientists new strategies to identify people who experienced intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and starvation during childhood at greatest risk of developing long term heart complications. The abstract study, presented at the Frontiers in CardioVascular Biology (FCVB) meeting, in London, UK, 30 March to 1 April 2012, makes use of a unique population of people exposed to extreme starvation both as foetuses and during childhood.

The cellular changes identified, investigators suggested, might be used to target treatments to children at greatest risk of developing heart complications. In a second study , also presented at FCVB 2012, Spanish investigators elucidated structural changes occurring in the heart as a direct consequence of IUGR. Monitoring reversal of these changes, suggested the authors, might offer a "fast track" approach for testing effectiveness of new therapies.

"Together, these innovative studies demonstrate the impact that basic research can have on the development of new approaches to heart treatments," said Sian Harding, FCVB 2012 chairperson of the Core Scientific Committee. "New treatments preventing heart changes associated with poor nutrition would benefit those exposed to IUGR and also children who've experienced reduced calorie intakes, either due to food shortages or extreme dieting."

Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), defined as a birth weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age, currently has an incidence estimated to be 8.1% of births in developed countries, and 6 to 30% of births in developing countries. Common causes include chronically malnourished mothers, maternal health problems during pregnancy (such as diabetes) and placentas that fail to transfer adequate nutrients from mother to foetus.

The connection between IUGR and development of subsequent heart disease was first recognised in 1989 when David Barker, from the MRC Unit at the University of Southampton, UK, showed that the lower the weight of a baby at birth and during infancy, the higher the risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD) and other chronic conditions in later life . IUGR newborns show signs of CV remodelling and dysfunction, including reduced myocardial velocities, dilated hearts and increased thickness of artery walls.

Studies have shown that children with IUGR have a distinct cardiac morphology, with "less elongated and more globular" cardiac ventricles. "As a consequence IUGR hearts are not as efficient in generating the normal stroke volumes, which results in the need for an increased heart rate to maintain cardiac outputs. The overall result is less efficient hearts," explained Iratxe Torre, one of the investigators, from The Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain.

No treatments are currently available to reverse the structural heart changes resulting from IUGR.

Telomere length provides CVD insights in survivors of Leningrad Siege.

In abstract P190 investigators from the Almazov Federal Heart, Blood and Endocrinology Centre, St Petersburg, Russian Federation, studied the telomere length of survivors from the siege of Leningrad (1941 to 1944), which was responsible for citizens being subjected to some of the most extreme levels of starvation known in history .

"For workers the bread ration was 250g, which amounted to just 300 calories, with around half that for the rest of the population," said Olga Freylikhman, one of the study investigators. The diet, she added, contained virtually no protein. By the end of the siege out of a population of 2.9 million, including 0.5 million children, over 630,000 people had died from hunger related causes.

Telomeres are the DNA-protein complexes that encase the ends of chromosomes. Often likened to the plastic caps on shoelaces, they serve the function of promoting chromosome stability. Consistently shortened telomere lengths have been associated with health risk and disease - one study showed that mean telomere lengths (measured in blood DNA) predicted the 15 year risk of CVD mortality, and others identified shorter telomeres among subjects who smoked, had elevated blood pressure, and premature myocardial infarctions (MIs).

Identification of survivors for the study was made possible by the fact that after World War II, inhabitants of Leningrad (now St Petersburg) who survived the siege were invited to join special support societies. From these societies, still in existence today, investigators have been able to recruit 40 subjects born during the siege, and 260 born before the siege who had lived through the deprivations as children. Survivors were compared to age matched controls born during the same period (1930 to 1943) and now living in St Petersburg, but who had not been exposed to siege conditions. All subjects were asked to fill in questionnaires regarding lifestyle factors and take part in a range of tests including blood pressure measurements, fasting lipids and glucose tests, carotid ultrasound, arterial stiffness, and cognitive function, as well as measurements of their telomere lengths by quantitative PCR.

While measurements of telomere length for all subjects are now in progress, preliminary results (presented in the abstract) comparing the telomere length of survivors of the siege (n=106), with controls (n=27) show that survivors had significantly shorter telomere lengths (p

"Our results suggest that measuring telomere length might ultimately be used as a way to stratify heart risk in people who've experienced both intrauterine starvation and food shortages during childhood. Those found to be at high risk could be managed using aggressive prevention measures," said Freylikhman.

One possible explanation for the lack of differences found between subjects exposed to intrauterine shortages and those experiencing childhood starvation, suggested Freylikhman, is that the people with IUGR who have shorter telomere lengths were more likely to have died immediately following the siege.

Further studies are planned to explore differences in telomere length according to the ages of children at the time of siege, and to explore whether telomere length and metabolic disorders affect the offspring of survivors of the siege.

Spanish team documents IUGR changes to heart muscle architecture

In the second study Iratxe Torre and colleagues set out to identify the changes that occur to the cardiac muscle "architecture" following IUGR . The investigators, from The Hospital Clinic of Barcelona, Spain, used an animal model of IUGR based on the selective ligature of the uteroplacental vessels in pregnant rabbits that restrict blood flow to the foetus.

"Rabbits represent an ideal model for IUGR. They have similar placenta structure and heart muscle compositions to humans and possess a two-horned uterus. Ligatures can be applied to one horn, while the other can be left to provide the perfect experimental control," explained Torre.

Using Polarization Second Harmonic Generation Microscopy (PSHGM), a technique that is highly sensitive to changes in the molecular organisation of cardiac sarcomeres, the team revealed differences in the position of myosin proteins between IUGR animals and controls.

Sarcomeres, representing the basic contractile unit of cardiac muscle, are composed of the protein actin (which forms the thin filaments) and the protein myosin (which forms the thick filament). Actin and myosin slide past each other when muscles contract and relax.

The Spanish team found that the distance between the myosin molecules inside the thick filaments (known as the helical pitch angle) was increased slightly in the IUGR rabbit muscle (by around two nanometres) immediately following birth in comparison to the normal controls. The displacement, persisted when young adults were examined again 70 days after birth.

"Our work suggests the 3D conformation of myosin within the cardiac thick filaments is changed following IUGR," said Torre. In a second abstract ?, she added, the team went on to observe that similar changes occur in the myosin filaments of older rabbits (aged around one year).

"It appears that growth restricted rabbits are born with prematurely old sarcomeres," said Torre. "Changes to the myosin structure might provide a direct explanation for the adverse CV outcomes found in IUGR."

Measurements of the helical pitch angle, which documents highly precise changes to the structure and orientation of myosin thick filaments, the investigators suggested, offers a new way to assess the effectiveness of potential treatments to prevent the cardiovascular complications of IUGR in animal models. "Using such a precise approach would allow much faster development of treatments related to both the heart changes occurring in IUGR and cardiomyopathies related to ageing," said Torre.

Sprint outlines LTE coverage plans at RCA Expo

Image
Sprint customer? Still supping from the 3G cup? Well if you were wondering if you'll ever get to try the sweet taste of LTE, wonder no more. The Now Network revealed a coverage map at the RCA Expo, and the image above was kindly grabbed by PC Mag's Sascha Segan. Those green areas are the locales that'll be getting LTE, and as you can see it's a fairly comprehensive -- though not altogether surprising -- spread. The rollout is said to be planned for completion by 2014, so you've still got time for that handset upgrade. Those of you in Montana or one of the many other blue areas on the map aren't entirely forgotten, though, as these regions will have roaming agreements in place, so no need for an extra contract just yet.

Report: Illegal overtime on Apple assembly line

(AP) ? Workers who assemble iPhones and iPads often put in more than 60 hours per week ?and sometimes work for a week straight? in violation of Chinese law, according to the first independent labor audit of the Chinese factories where Apple products are made.

The report released Thursday by the Washington-based Fair Labor Association says Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., the Taiwanese company that runs the factories, is committing to reducing weekly work time to the legal Chinese maximum of 49 hours.

That limit is routinely ignored in factories throughout China. And the FLA found that many workers at the Hon Hai factories want to work even more overtime, so they can make more money. Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn, told the FLA that it will raise hourly salaries to compensate workers for the reduced hours.

Auret van Heerden, the CEO of the FLA, said that it's common to find workers in developing countries looking for more overtime, rather than less.

"They're often single, they're young, and there's not much to do, so frankly they'd just rather work and save," he said.

Average monthly salaries at the three factories inspected by the FLA ranged from $360 to $455. Foxconn recently raised salaries by up to 25 percent in the second major salary hike in less than two years.

Foxconn employs 1.2 million workers in China to assemble products not just for Apple, but for Microsoft Corp., Hewlett-Packard Co. and other pillars of the U.S. technology industry.

Workers who make Apple products have been the subject of increasing scrutiny, in part due to a one-man Broadway play by Mike Daisey. Public radio program "This American Life" used Daisey's monologue in a show about Foxconn on Jan. 6, but retracted it two weeks ago, saying that Daisey had fabricated key parts of it, including that he saw underage workers emerging from Foxconn factories.

The FLA didn't find instances of child or forced labor.

Apple has kept a close watch on its suppliers for years, and in January took the further step of joining the FLA. The organization has audited overseas suppliers for fashion companies and other industries, but Apple was the first electronics company to join. It also commissioned the FLA to produce a special audit of Foxconn's factories.

"Our team has been working for years to educate workers, improve conditions and make Apple's supply chain a model for the industry, which is why we asked the FLA to conduct these audits," Apple said in a statement.

The FLA has its roots in a 1996 meeting of multinational companies and nonprofits convened by President Clinton, who challenged them to improve conditions for garment and shoe workers. Its 19-member board is composed equally of representatives from member companies, universities and nonprofits like the Global Fairness Initiative. The organization is funded by participating companies.

Labor unions have criticized Apple's use of the FLA, insisting that audits are a "top-down" approach. Foxconn's workers would be better served, they believe, by being able to organize.

"The report will include new promises by Apple that stand to be just as empty as the ones made over the past 5 years," said SumOfUS.org, a coalition of trade unions and consumer groups, ahead of the release of the report.

Apple CEO Tim Cook visited a Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou, China, on Wednesday.

In February and March, FLA auditors visited three Foxconn complexes: Guanlan and Longhua near the coastal manufacturing hub of Shenzhen, and Chengdu in the inland province of Sichuan. They employ a total of 178,000 workers. The auditors examined one years' worth of payroll and time records at each factory, conducted interviews with some workers and had 35,000 fill out anonymous surveys.

The FLA found few safety violations, noting that the company had already dealt with problems like blocked fire exits and defective protective gear. It's also taken step to reduce the amount of aluminum dust in the air, after the metal created an explosion at the Chengdu factory last year, killing four workers.

The FLA said Foxconn has been recording only accidents that caused work stoppage, but is now committing to recording and addressing all accidents that result in an injury.

Heerden said his auditors found that Foxconn workers are the happiest with their jobs when they work 52 hours a week, well below the amount they often put in. Reducing their hours to 49 hours should help Foxconn retain workers in the long run, he said.

Apple's and FLA's own guidelines call for work weeks of 60 hours or less. Apple has started tracking the working hours of half a million workers in its supply chain, and said that 89 percent of them worked 60 hours or less in February, even though the company was ramping up production of the new iPad. Workers averaged 48 hours per week.

The Foxconn factories are the last step in the process of manufacturing an iPhone or other Apple device, most of which have hundreds of components. Research firm IHS iSuppli estimates that Apple pays $8 for the assembly of a 16-gigabyte iPhone 4S and $188 for its components. It sells the phone wholesale for about $600 to phone companies, who then subsidize it to be able to sell it for $200 with a two-year service contract.

Lowry may land net-zero community | Inside Real Estate News

Sub-area map of Buckley Annex at Lowry.

Lowry is about to grow by 80 acres and 800 residential units.

The Lowry Redevelopment Authority board has approved an Economic Development Conveyance for the Buckley Annex property, bordered by Monaco Parkway, First Avenue, Quebec and Bayaud streets. The Air Force is expected to transfer the deed in the next few weeks.

The 70-acre Buckley Annex property is the last remaining parcel of land to be transferred by the Department of Defense to the LRA.

It is one of the largest infill sites in Denver. Established in the 1970s, the Buckley Annex contained the Denver Center of the Defense Finance and Accounting Services and the Air Reserve Personnel Center with some 3,000 employees. It was announced for closure in 2005 and the property was completely vacated on Sept. 15, 2011.

Net-Zero possibility

As earlier reported by InsideRealEstateNews, the LRA is working with Denver?s Office of Economic Development on a ?net-zero neighborhood? concept. Under that concept, the neighborhood would generate as much energy as it utilizes on an annual basis. Net zero is achieved through a combination of energy-efficient building standards along with renewable energy technologies such as solar or geothermal power. Energy credits from off-site systems may also be utilized.

?This kind of vibrant mixed-use neighborhood is what makes Denver one of the most innovative and sustainable cities in America,? said Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock.

Rendering of Townhome Boulevard in new 80-acre Buckley Annex coming to Lowry.

?District 5 is truly on the move,? said Denver City Councilwoman Mary Beth Susman. ?Major developments like this and Ninth and Colorado will soon create new jobs, amenities and a mix of housing choices for area residents.?

The LRA will accept the property at no initial cost, but net profits, after all development costs and financing are paid off, will be shared with the Air Force. The negotiated agreement recognizes the high initial costs, such as demolition and obsolete utilities, associated with the redevelopment of a military installation. The LRA will pay for approximately $45 million in development costs through land sales, traditional bank loans, tax increment financing and federal grants.

The Lowry Redevelopment Authority conducted a public redevelopment planning process in 2007-8 involving numerous community task forces and stakeholder groups. The LRA will be the master developer of the site, as it has for the rest of Lowry, and will sell land to residential and commercial developers for vertical construction.

The conceptual redevelopment plan calls for:

  • A vibrant, urban, mixed-use area that integrates with surrounding neighborhoods.
  • Approximately 800 residential units, including apartments, townhomes and both attached and detached homes, at a wide range of price points.
  • Up to 200,000 square feet of commercial space, approximately half office and half neighborhood retail.
  • A 4.5-acre community park, several small pocket parks and preservation of several hundred existing trees.

?This will be an exciting new neighborhood for Lowry and Denver,? said Monty Force, incoming executive director for the Lowry Redevelopment Authority. ?Where else can you live in a new green home, perhaps a ?right-sized? one, with new amenities at Lowry and easy access to Crestmoor Park and Cherry Creek??

In the coming months, the LRA will create a General Development Plan and zoning package based on the Buckley Annex Redevelopment Plan. Building demolition and infrastructure improvements are currently scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year. At full buildout, the development is projected to create approximately $1 million annually in new property taxes and nearly $500,000 annually in sales taxes. The project is expected to create 350 construction jobs at the peak of construction and 400 retail and office jobs at full buildout.

To learn what is currently available for sale at Lowry, please visit this COhomefinder.com link.?

Space Junk ? As If There Wasn't Enough to Worry About | The ...

Just when you thought you had enough to worry about, now comes the news that space junk, the debris flying around in space, could hit the International Space Station or satellites. There was just another near-miss, according to Reuters.

A passing piece of potentially dangerous space debris forced astronauts at the International Space Station to temporarily seek refuge in escape ships early on Saturday, U.S. officials said.

The debris, a fragment from an old Russian satellite named Cosmos 2251 that smashed into an Iridium Communications spacecraft in 2009, passed harmlessly by the $100 billion orbital outpost at 2:38 a.m. EDT (0638 GMT), NASA said.

So, how much of this junk is out there? A lot.

More than 20,000 pieces of man-made debris larger than a softball currently orbit Earth. Space junk travels at speeds of up to 17,500 mph (28,164 kph), so even small pieces have enough energy to cause significant damage upon impact.

NASA says the greatest risk from debris comes from untrackable objects. The Feb. 10, 2009, collision of the Russian and Iridium satellites added more than 2,000 pieces of trackable debris to the growing list of space junk. Two years earlier,China?intentionally destroyed one of its defunct weather satellites to test a missile, generating more than 3,000 pieces of debris. (Read More)

Ben Ryan, a former Navy SEAL writing in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, estimates the number of objects to be much higher, and warns that Defense cuts could effect the Space Fence program, putting satellites at risk.

Official estimates put the number of objects in Earth?s orbit in the millions, with at least 500,000 pieces more than half-an-inch long. Our orbit is now cluttered with defunct satellites, spent rocket boosters, and nuts and bolts from old spacecraft. And as the number of countries with space programs has increased, so has the amount of debris. ?.

If a commercial satellite gets taken down or compromised by colliding with space debris, the daily lives of tens of millions of Americans could get disrupted. Think of all the devices you use that depend on signals from Earth?s orbit ? that GPS system, your iPhone, even the radio in your car.

These devices stop working if their associated satellites get damaged.

More importantly, American military operations routinely rely on satellite technology to gain the upper hand in battle. Soldiers use satellite radios to communicate information that is critical to the success of missions and to their safety and survival. In today?s world, in which we rely increasingly on special operations forces working in smaller numbers and at greater distances from supporting forces, dependable communications are paramount. If a satellite goes down from a collision, service members can get killed. (Read More)

With the money the Obama administration?s been throwing away on green projects run by their cronies, it wouldn?t be surprising to see the Space Fence program scaled back.
