Sony is continuing to push the PlayStation 3 line with a slimmer model, and their UK office thinks it?ll be a holiday hit. According to one exec, it?s perfect for people passing on the Wii U.

That claim comes from PlayStation UK managing director Fergal Gara, who told CVG that the casual gaming crowd is ripe for the pickings this year:

?If you look at the upcoming Christmas market, the Wii will be selling in very low volumes ? it?s on its way out ? and the Wii U will arrive, but it will bring in a relatively small number of early adopter consumers,? he said.

?We see ourselves well positioned for the casual market who won?t buy Wii U on day one. We?ve got a wow moment, we feel. I remember when people picked up the Wii controller for the first time, that was a big moment, it was a casual market breakthrough, but we thing we?ve got a casual market breakthrough as well with Wonderbook and the lowest priced PS3 yet.?

At this point, the PlayStation 3 has just about caught up with the Xbox 360 on a global scale (after languishing in third place its entire lifecycle), but still trails well behind the original Nintendo Wii.

Month-by-month sales will determine who wins the holidays, though. Unless Nintendo has mass production and supply issues, it?s unlikely that the PS3 can outsell the Wii U at the end of the year, especially if it does as well as the original Wii, which netted 600,000 units sold during its first week in North America alone.

THE SIGNS ARE BEGINNING TO SHOW -- "NOT SINCE HAROLD WASHINGTON"? I am blessed to have been a youth organizer for the historic '83 campaign for Mayor Harold Washington and in part I would not have been empowered to play the role that I and other young people did in '83 had it not been for this same Mr. Ed Gardner providing the funds for the "Come Alive October Five" Voter Registration and Voter Education Campaign. And as a young person I watched how this effort brought together so many cross sections of the Black community leadership, many of whom had various personal issues with each other and after many many meetings they set aside their personal issues with each other to focus on their unity behind Harold Washington. Voter registration problems widening in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) ? What first appeared to be an isolated problem in one Florida county has now spread statewide, with election officials in nine counties informing prosecutors or state election officials about questionable voter registration forms filled out on behalf of the Republican Party of Florida.

State Republican officials already have fired the vendor it had hired to register voters, and took the additional step of filing an election fraud complaint against the company, Strategic Allied Consulting, with state officials. That complaint was handed over Friday to state law-enforcement authorities.

A spokesman for Florida's GOP said the matter was being treated seriously.

"We are doing what we can to find out how broad the scope is," said Brian Burgess, the spokesman.

Florida is the battleground state where past election problems led to the chaotic recount that followed the 2000 presidential election.

The Florida Democratic Party called on the state to "revoke" the ability of state Republicans to continue to register voters while the investigation continues. Oct. 9 is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 6 presidential election.

"It is clear that the Republican Party of Florida does not have the institutional controls in place to be trusted as a third-party, voter registration organization," said Scott Arceneaux, executive director of the Florida Democratic Party.

The Republican Party of Florida has paid Strategic Allied Consulting more than $1.3 million, and the Republican National Committee used the group for work in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia.

The company said earlier this week that it was cooperating with elections officials in Florida. It initially said the suspect forms were turned in by one person, who has been fired.

"Strategic has a zero-tolerance policy for breaking the law," Fred Petti, a company attorney, said Thursday.

But late Friday the company put out a lengthy statement on its website and said that it was aware of questionable forms in other counties and that it confirmed in each of those counties that the problem was with "one individual." Strategic said it had more than 2,000 people working in the state of Florida.

Strategic insisted that it has "rigorous quality control measures" and it blamed the Republican Party of Florida for the decision by Republican National Committee to dump the company on Thursday.

"When the Republican Party of Florida chose to make likely libelous comments about our effort and stated that the Republican National Committee suggested us as the vendor, the RNC was put in the unenviable position of ending a long-term relationship for the sake of staying focused on the election," the company stated.

In Florida, it is a third-degree felony to "willfully submit" any false voter registration information, a crime punishable by up to five years in prison.

In recent years, Florida's Republican-controlled Legislature ? citing suspicious voter registration forms turned in by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN ? has cracked down on groups holding voter registration drives.

The League of Women Voters filed a federal lawsuit against some of the restrictions and Florida agreed earlier this month to drop a new requirement to turn in registration applications within 48 hours after they are signed. The state has reinstated a 10-day deadline.

The questionable forms tied to the Republican Party have showed up in South Florida, including Miami-Dade, as well as counties in southwest and northeast Florida as well as the Florida Panhandle.

Election officials in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties on Thursday handed over more than 100 suspect forms to local prosecutors. They did so days after officials in Palm Beach County also alerted prosecutors.

Ann Bodenstein, the elections supervisor for Santa Rosa County, said her staff started raising questions after an employee saw a form that changed the home address of a neighbor.

Paul Lux, election supervisor for Okaloosa County, said questionable forms in the Florida Panhandle appear to have all come from Strategic's effort based at the local Republican Party headquarters. He said his office has turned up dozens of suspect forms.

Lux said there have been forms that listed dead people and were either incomplete or illegible. He met with local prosecutors on Friday, but added that his staff was still going through hundreds of forms dropped off by Strategic employees.

Lux, who is a Republican, said he warned local party officials earlier this month when he first learned the company was paying people to register voters.

"I told them 'This is not going to end well,'" Lux said.

But Lux added that he did not blame the Republican Party of Florida.

"I can't place the blame on RPOF if they hired a firm and that firm wasn't following the rules they were given to follow," Lux said.

The state party filed the complaint against Strategic Allied Consulting with state election officials, who late Friday handed the case over to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

An FDLE spokeswoman said the agency would not automatically open a criminal investigation, but would review to see if there were "possible criminal acts."

Truck deals, pent-up demand boost September U.S. auto sales

DETROIT (Reuters) - U.S. auto sales will likely rise 8 percent or more in September as dealers offered generous cash incentives on pickup trucks that amounted to as much as $10,000 a vehicle in some areas of the United States, analysts said.

The annual sales rate is expected to be around 14.5 million in September, according to a Reuters poll. That would mark the fourth straight month the sales rate has held above 14 million, buoyed by pent-up demand and attractive credit terms.

Automakers, led by General Motors Co , are offering the cash incentives to help sell down excess truck inventory at a time when truck sales typically accelerate, analysts said.

Truck demand been slightly weaker than usual this year, due in part to high gasoline prices that have stayed near $4 a gallon this year, Kelley Blue Book analyst Alec Gutierrez said.

"There are some pretty sizable incentives out there," he said. "All the manufacturers overestimated the strength of the truck market this year and probably overproduced."

Analysts were quick to point out that the incentives are not large enough to signal a return to Detroit's historic pattern of offering steep discounts to meet outsized sales targets.

In fact, incentive spending overall fell 6.7 percent this month as cars and crossovers commanded higher prices, auto research firm TrueCar.com said.

But investors are concerned about high truck inventory levels. GM has 122 days of trucks on lots, well above the roughly 80 days considered optimal. Ford Motor Co has roughly 77 days, while Chrysler Group LLC has 99 days.

GM is offering as much as $3,500 cash back on its 2012 Chevrolet Silverado to cut inventory. In response, Ford is providing up to $5,500 back on 2012 F-150, while Chrysler is offering up to $4,000 in rebates on its Ram 1500, according to KBB, which tracks vehicle pricing.

Some GM dealers are offering as much as $10,000 cash back, Jefferies analyst Peter Nesvold said. For example, Jim Ellis Buick GMC Atlanta is offering that deal this month on the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500, the Atlanta-based dealer said on its website.

"That's clearly not a sustainable number," Nesvold said. "But right now I think the market will draw some relief that GM is able to sell down excess inventory in a measured way."

MIXED ECONOMIC DATA

Last year, Japanese automakers were hurt by inventory shortages stemming from the March 11 earthquake in Japan. In September, both Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co are projected to show higher market share and double-digit gains.

The U.S. auto industry is now in its third year of recovery after a scathing economic downturn forced GM and Chrysler to undergo government-funded bankruptcy restructurings in 2009.

During the downturn, Americans postponed new vehicle purchases. Now vehicle sales have benefited as more of these consumers' vehicles push past the point of repair. Attractive credit terms have also helped boost sales.

Edmunds.com, which tracks auto industry data, expects sales to grow about 13 percent this year to 14.4 million. It also predicts sales will grow just 4 percent in 2013 to 15 million.

That would make 2013 "the first year of non-double digit sales growth since the recovery began," Edmunds Chief Economist Lacey Plache said.

"It's economic uncertainty, which we're getting due to the unresolved fiscal issues at home and those actual and feared spillover effects from the slowing economies abroad," she said.

Among the biggest risks is Europe, where sales are falling as austerity keeps potential buyers away from showrooms. In China, the growth in new car demand has also slowed slightly.

The U.S. auto sales report is among the first snapshots of the American consumer each month. In August, the U.S. auto industry posted its best August in five years.

The sales pace indicated that consumers were faring better in the third quarter after weak consumption held back U.S. economic growth in the second quarter.

Still, Americans' assessment of the economic recovery continues to be mixed. On Friday, a key measure of U.S. consumer sentiment rose to its highest level in four months, but it fell short of economists' forecasts.

Doctoral student developing next generation of lithium-ion batteries for longer lasting mobile devices, electric cars

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Sometimes even batteries can use a boost of energy, according to the focus of a Kansas State University graduate student's research.

Steven Arnold Klankowski, a doctoral candidate in chemistry, La Crescent, Minn., is working under Jun Li, professor of chemistry, to develop new materials that could be used in future lithium-ion batteries. The materials look to improve the energy storage capacity of batteries so that laptops, cellphones, electric cars and other mobile devices will last longer between charges.

Additionally, lithium-ion batteries that can store energy and deliver power more rapidly will be a more viable alternative power source for vehicles and machines powered by alternative energy, Klankowski said. For example, solar- and wind-powered technologies could switch to the battery in the evening when there is a lack of wind or sunlight to produce energy.

"The battery market is moving very fast these days as everyone is trying to get an advantage for their electric vehicles and cellphones," said Klankowski, who also has a background in materials engineering. "As our devices get smarter, so must our methods to supply greater amounts of portable electrical energy to power these devices."

For his research, Klankowski is developing and testing a high-performance nanostructure of silicon coated onto carbon nanofibers for the use as an electrode in lithium-ion batteries. The electrodes, which look like a dense brush, give the battery greater charge capabilities and storage capacity. This is anticipated to replace current commercial electrodes that are made from simple carbon-based materials.

The material being developed and improved by Klankowski helps the electrode store roughly 10 times the amount of energy as current electrodes -- giving the batteries a 10-15 percent improvement in current battery technology.

"We're trying to go for higher energy capacity," Klankowski said. "To do that we're looking at if we can store more energy per the electrode's size or mass, and if we can use that energy more quickly to make the battery like a capacitor. Batteries and capacitors are on opposite sides of the energy storage field. We'd like to move them both closer together."

In the lab, Klankowski looks at how the characteristics of the lithium-silicon-alloy material differ with each production cycle and how those characteristics can be improved to move lithium-ion batteries closer to capacitors.

The material is also studied for its ability to store energy. Tests, which simulate a battery's operation, repeatedly charge and discharge the material with energy.

According to U.S. Department of Energy's requirements, a battery must remain at 80 percent capacity after 300 charge-discharge cycles.

"A battery today tends to die after 400-500 cycles or three years," Klankowski said. "One of the things we'll want to improve on is that lasting performance. It won't be much of an advantage if your phone's battery can last for 36 hours for the first few months but then only two hours after that. With the progress we are seeing, I hope one day to drive from Manhattan to my folks' house in Minnesota on a single battery change."

A patent application for the material has been filed with Kansas State University Research Foundation. The foundation is a nonprofit corporation responsible for managing technology transfer activities at the university.

Klankowski was one of five doctoral students at Kansas State University to recently earn a scholarship from the research foundation to help him further develop his research.

Educational Policy: High-Stakes Testing | Rick's Algeblog

Emphasis on high-stakes, standardized testing in the United States, dates back to the mid-1800s and parallels what was happening in England during this period. At that time, decision makers used high-stakes testing for purposes of accountability and ?the stakes were much higher for teachers than for students?. Indeed?there were no repercussions at all for students? (Wiliam, 2010, p. 109). Wiliam went on to note that in the United States between 1910 and 1940, the norm was for students to attend school until they were 18, and it was ?inappropriate to assess students against standards intended for the small proportion going on to higher education? (p. 109). In terms of 21^st-century school accountability, a research study conducted by Stranahan, H. A. Borg, and Borg (2009) concluded that schools ought to be held accountable for the quality of the education they provide, whereas the school?s performance grade is best determined by how much students? test scores improved over time and not based on the aggregate level of student scores in a year. This conclusion is contrary in theory to the guidelines outlined in the Federal No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB). Through current research, Amrein and Berliner (2003) found that the importance placed on high-stakes testing denies students? ?opportunities to direct their own learning as they ?become less intrinsically motivated to learn and less likely to engage in critical thinking? (p. 32). Moreover, in a recent Texas study, McNeil, Coppola, Radigan, and Heilig (2008) found that too often in-class curriculum takes the form of standardized test drills that ?drifts towards ensuring that students can answer the questions that will appear on the tests?. This narrower, more rigid curriculum affects students and their motivation to complete school? (p. 28). These authors found that ?teaching to the test? had a negative effect on students? desire to complete school. In addition, a lack of motivation often led to students repeating a grade because of poor standardized test results. The authors concluded that as a result, ?students who are required to repeat a grade lose face in front of their parents, community, and peers? (McNeil, Coppola, Radigan, & Heilig, 2008, p. 30). In a recent study by Williams (2003), she concluded that high-stakes testing erodes students? enthusiasm for learning, and that motivational assessment strategies, based on predominantly formative and relevant lessons, were more effective and meaningful. In addition, high-stakes testing de-personalizes the learning process by placing the primary ?focus on standards, accountability, and assessment rather than providing a multicultural education? (University of Phoenix, 2012, ?Week Eight Lecture Notes,? p. 1). According to Gunzenhauser (2003), ?the default philosophy underlying high-stakes testing is a philosophy of education in which tests designed to be part of a system of accountability drive the curriculum, limit instructional innovation, and keep educators from establishing their own priorities and vision? (p. 52), which inevitably results in conflicts regarding these tests? effectiveness as assessment tools. Gunzenhauser went on to warn school communities not ?to settle for the default philosophy of education associated with high-stakes testing? (p. 58). Another significant drawback of placing too much importance on standardized test results is that various studies have shown questions on these tests are inherently bias. Freedle (2006) found that questions on both the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) were ?racially biased in terms of mean correct responses because they make the false assumption that all examinees have had equal opportunity to learn the concepts and materials used in the test? (p. 187). In addition, Freedle noted multiple examples of ethnic bias in the SAT in terms of vocabulary, which led to ?false conclusions regarding racial and ethnic differences? (p. 187). The author concluded that these particular standardized ?test results influence racial theories of genetic superiority and inferiority? [and that these] tests can distort the true ability of large groups of disadvantaged students? (p. 225). Ultimately, such biased results and their interpretation negatively influence the educational and career choices students have who are affected by these standardized tests. In other recent research, Boaler (2003) noted in a localized study that standardized testing caused barriers for many California math students by disrupting the classroom learning process because teachers were mandated to ?teach to the test.? Even though many private/prep schools, colleges, universities, and graduate schools use standardized test scores for placement purposes, unless these institutions place less emphasis on standardized testing, allowing admission decisions to be based more on personal attributes rather than impersonal test scores, the injustice of the current system will remain. In terms of high-stakes testing determining school performance, decision makers need to re-evaluate the accountability criteria used to measure such assessments, placing more emphasis on classroom effectiveness and the learning process, while de-emphasizing grades and test results.

To address the needs of 21^st-century learners, there needs to be measurable changes made to the way in which the current educational system assesses student progress and achievement. High-stakes, standardized testing needs to be de-emphasized in our schools, allowing the learning process to be the priority, rather than relying on the impersonal, and often times inaccurate, interpretation of test results. This represents an educational change in policy and practice that would promote a better and more effective learning experience for the 21^st-century student.

Lucky Norway family wins national lottery three times

OSLO (Reuters) - Good fortune and having children just seem to go together for Norwegian mother Hege Jeanette Oksnes.

Each time the 29-year old petrol station attendant from tiny Austevoll island off Norway's west coast gives birth, someone in her family wins the national lottery.

"This is completely insane... we don't even play the lottery that often," Oksnes said only days after the family collected 12.2 million crowns ($2.12 million) with their third lottery win in six years.

Oksnes, who serves hot dogs at a petrol station, gave birth to her first child in 2006 just one day after her father Leif won 4.2 million crowns on the national lottery.

Three years later, Oksnes herself won, claiming 8.2 million crowns one day before giving birth to her second child.

To complete the hat-trick, Oksnes' 18-year-old brother Tord won the very same lottery this weekend, just months after she gave birth to her third child.

After three children though, it may be time to call it quits.

"My husband thinks we have enough money now," she said.

Oksnes bought new cars with her winnings and did a bit of travelling, but has put most of the money in the bank, hoping to find a dream property to build a new house.
