Bankruptcy Guidance You Can Place To Use - Finance

If you have had any of your possessions repossessed by the IRS, personal bankruptcy may be an option for you. Although bankruptcy tends to destroy a person?s credit, it?s occasionally the only available option. To find out more about bankruptcy and what it entails, view the following article.

Keep in mind that there is the possibility that your bankruptcy could be denied so you should have an alternative plan in mind. You can determine what you will do about your mortgage and car payment in advance, if you are prepared for possible rejection.

Before you decide to file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, you should consider what your bankruptcy might have on others, as your family and friends may be affected. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy will relieve you of your legal responsibility to pay any joint debts. Sadly, this will not be the case for your co debtor. Your creditors may simply turn their attention to your hapless acquaintance.

Be sure to hire an attorney before you embark upon filing for personal bankruptcy. There are many different aspects to filing bankruptcy, and you may not understand everything there is to know. A specialized bankruptcy lawyer can ensure that you are handling your bankruptcy filing the right way.

Determine which assets won?t be seized before filing for bankruptcy. The Bankruptcy Code contains a list of various assets that are excluded from bankruptcy. Be well prepared for bankruptcy by reviewing this list. It will tell you whether are not the things you value most are subject to seizure. If you don?t heed that advice, you might find yourself getting surprised when your favorite things are repossessed.

After going through bankruptcy, a lot of people think they are being financially responsible if they shun all forms of credit. This is actually a poor idea because credit helps to build good credit. If you don?t ever use credit, your credit history will not improve, and you may not be able to purchase important things like a home and car. One credit card is adequate to begin rebuilding your credit rating.

You must be entirely candid when it comes to declaring assets and obligations in your bankruptcy petition. All of your financial information, be it positive or negative, must be disclosed to those in charge of filing your case. They need to know it all. Being honest is both the right thing to do and, moreover, it is required by law.

You should never feel shame for needing to file for bankruptcy. Often, with bankruptcy, come feelings of guilt, shame and worthlessness. But, there is nothing positive about feeling this way and it can actually affect your mental state. Keeping an optimistic view as you deal with your financial woes is the most productive way of dealing with a bankruptcy.

Avoid paying for a consultation with the bankruptcy attorney, but do ask many questions. Most attorneys offer free initial consultations, and you should take advantage of the chance to interview multiple practitioners. Make a choice only if you have received good answers to all the questions and concerns you brought to the table. You don?t have to make your decision right after this consultation. Take your time, and schedule consultations with more than one lawyer.

As you can see, filing for bankruptcy is a serious decision that must be considered carefully before you make it. If it seems to make sense in light of your financial problems, you should seek an experienced bankruptcy attorney who can guide you toward a fresh, clean start!

Economist: Euro crisis could erupt again this year

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Is the euro crisis over? A leading U.S. economist says not by a long shot.

Even as the head of the European Central Bank talked Friday of "positive contagion" in the markets and predicted an economic recovery for the recession-hit eurozone later this year, economist Barry Eichengreen warned that the debt crisis that has shaken Europe to its core could easily erupt again this year unless European leaders move faster to solve their problems.

While European governments and markets have been breathing easier in recent months after years of turmoil, it's no time for complacency, said Eichengreen, who has chronicled the Great Depression and explored the consequences of a breakup of the euro currency used by 17 nations.

"Nothing has been resolved in the eurozone, where markets have swung from undue pessimism to undue optimism," Eichengreen told The Associated Press in an interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. "They said all the right things last year ... and they've been backtracking ever since."

He warns that the crisis over too much debt burdening governments and banks in the 17-country currency group "is going to heat up again in 2013."

He urged eurozone leaders follow up on its proposals to steady its banking system and keep failed banks from adding to government debt through expensive bailouts.

European leaders in Davos this week are seeking to reassure investors and corporate leaders that the continent is on the mend after its punishing debt crises.

European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi on Friday forecast a recovery in the eurozone economy in the second half of the year, and spoke of "a new restored sense of relative tranquility" and "positive contagion on the financial markets."

But he acknowledged "we don't see this being transmitted into the real economy yet."

Draghi said governments need to move ahead with structural reforms to make their economies grow faster, which will help reduce government debt.

Heavily indebted countries such as Spain and Italy faced alarmingly high borrowing costs on bond markets last year, as investors wondered whether they would be able to keep paying their debts. Those bond market rates fell after key steps by European leaders. One was the European Central Bank's offer to purchase bonds issued by indebted countries if they promise to reduce their deficits. Another was a proposal to set up a so-called banking union that would keep failed banks from bankrupting any one country by transferring the supervision of bank behavior and finances to a single, central EU supervisor at the ECB.

Europe, meanwhile, is in a recession that is putting added pressure on government finances.

"Europeans will be shocked out of their complacency, I think, soon enough," Eichengreen said. "There will be a relapse to the greater volatility of the first half of last year."

"None of the underlying problems have been solved. There is no economic growth in Europe. Germany itself is on the verge of recession. The banking union doesn't exist. There's less consensus on completing it than we thought last year, so the markets are going to lose patience at some point and the crisis will be back. "

Eichengreen, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, studied the possibility of a eurozone breakup long before the crisis that started in late 2009 forced other people to consider what was once unthinkable. He concluded that leaving the euro would be disastrously expensive and cause widespread chaos for any country that tries it.

Political leaders are aware of those high costs, which means a country such as debt-strapped Greece leaving the eurozone "is off the table for the moment," he said.

Concerns about Europe's economic future ? and the threat that Britain could one day pull out of the European Union, whose 27 members together make up the world's largest economy ? clouded this year's gathering in the Swiss Alpine resort of Davos.

The forum pulls together corporate and political leaders who strike business deals, strategize about world problems and attend lavish parties ? and comes under regular criticism from activists and workers who say the elite event is disconnected from the world's economic realities.

Activists at Davos took over a Shell station Friday to protest drilling for oil in the Arctic.

Tim Cook sends out congratulatory email, announces Town Hall meeting

Just like last year, following another record-breaking -- if not Wall Street pleasing -- set of quarterly results, Apple's CEO Tim Cook sent out a congratulatory email to everyone on the team, and announced that they'd be rallying for a Town Hall meeting today at 10am PST/1pm EST. Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac scored a copy, here's the intro:

Team, We?ve just reported another record setting quarter, thanks to everyone?s incredible hard work and focus. We sold over 75 million iOS devices in the holiday quarter alone, which is a testament to the strength of Apple?s innovation.

Regardless of how you feel about the numbers, the prospects, the manipulations, or even the products and services themselves, the people at Apple really did work their collective asses off to launch everything they did before the holidays, and they pulled off one of the most profitable quarters for any company ever -- the likes of which have never been seen outside the biggest of big oil.

Cook's right to be proud. Apple is right to be proud. Congratulations and thanks for the hard work, can't wait to see what you have in store for us this year!

Stocks gain on economic indicators, US earnings

(AP) ? Europe's stock markets were broadly higher Thursday amid signs the continent's services and manufacturing slump was easing.

Shares creeped higher as investors welcomed surveys showing a smaller than forecast contraction in both manufacturing and services in the 17-country eurozone this month. That came after overnight data showing a pickup in China's factory production as well as strong tech earnings that spurred Wall Street to rally to a five-year high.

Britain's FTSE 100 rose 0.3 percent to 6,214.89. Germany's DAX gained 0.1 percent to 7,711.67 and France's CAC-40 rose 0.2 percent to 3,733.78.

Wall Street appeared headed for a day of muted trading, with Dow Jones industrial futures barely changed at 13,722 while S&P 500 futures fell 0.2 percent to 1,488.

Markets shrugged off news from Germany's banking sector, where Commerzbank said it planned as many as 6,000 job cuts over the next three years. The country's second-largest bank, which was bailed out by the government in 2009, expects to cut between 4,000 and 6,000 jobs by 2016.

Grim employment data in Spain also failed to dent markets optimism. Spain's unemployment rate shot up to a record 26.02 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, leaving almost 6 million Spaniards out of work, the country's statistics agency said.

Stock markets in Asia were boosted from HSBC Bank's preliminary survey on China's monthly manufacturing. Its index rose to a two-year high of 51.9 in January from 51.5 in December. A reading above 50 indicates expansion on a scale of 100.

Analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said before the survey's release that they expected China to beat estimates. "Manufacturing sentiment should have been boosted by previous fiscal measures and optimism towards the new government" following the once in a decade leadership change late last year, the bank said in an email.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1.3 percent to close at 10,620.87. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 advanced 0.5 percent to 4,810.20, its highest close since May 2011. Benchmarks in Singapore, Thailand, and the Philippines also rose.

Investors were encouraged by developments in Washington, where the U.S. House of Representatives voted to avert the imminent threat of a government default by suspending the debt limit ? the amount of money the government is allowed to borrow.

The law requires that Congress approve raising the amount the government can borrow to pay its obligations as the debt exceeds its limit, currently at $16.4 trillion. That's the cumulative amount the country owes as a result of routinely spending more than it collects in taxes.

On Wednesday, IBM single-handedly lifted the Dow Jones industrial average to a five-year high. The tech giant's quarterly earnings beat Wall Street's expectations, thanks to its lucrative Internet-based "cloud" computing business and sales of software services.

Benchmark oil for January was up 37 cents to $95.60 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Wednesday the contract dropped $1.45, or 1.5 percent, to finish at $95.23 per barrel, the first decline of more than 1 percent since Dec. 21.

In currencies, the euro rose to $1.3323 from $1.3321 late Wednesday in New York. The dollar rose to 89.5890 yen from 88.66 yen.

Canadian police in Algeria to investigate gas plant attack

OTTAWA (Reuters) - Canadian police are in Algeria looking for evidence that Canadian citizens were involved in last week's attack and hostage-taking at a desert gas plant, a government official said on Thursday.

Around 70 people died when Algerian troops stormed the plant and ended the siege on Sunday. Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal said a Canadian gunman, identified only as "Chedad," had coordinated the operation.

"I can confirm that they are on the ground," the official told Reuters when asked whether members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police were in Algeria.

The official declined to give more details. A spokeswoman for the Mounties said she could not comment.

On Tuesday Canada said diplomats were in Algeria seeking evidence that Canadians were involved.

One European official and one former senior European counter-terrorism official said they understood there was information confirming that at least one Canadian was among the hostage takers.

Ottawa says it has received no proof from Algerian authorities that this was the case.

But the European sources said they did not believe the initial Algerian claim that a Canadian may have served as leader of the militants who took the hostages.

One of the European sources said multiple survivors of the incident reported one of the militants spoke English with either an English or North American accent.

European officials said it was highly unlikely that a British person was among the attackers.

Canadians suspected of ties to North African Islamic militants historically have come from French-speaking Quebec, not from English-speaking Canadian provinces.

6 Steps To Building Your Real Estate Career | CAREEREALISM

Real Estate CareerYou?ve completed the required training. You?ve successfully passed the tests and paid all of your fees. It?s finally time to begin your real estate career. But where do you begin?

1. Review The Laws

First, check with your local real estate association for specific laws in your state. Although most states require realtors to work in an office under a broker for a set period of time, the laws vary from state to state. If your state requires this, you should find a real estate office that you feel has the same goals, personality, and style that fit you and your vision for your future career in real estate.

2. Get Business Cards

Business cards?are one of the easiest self-promotional items you can have. Order or print about 250 business cards with a professional picture of yourself and your contact information. Hand these cards to everyone you meet, from your child?s teacher to the cashier at the grocery store. Let people know that you?re a real estate professional, you never know when you will find someone looking for a new home.

In addition, some people have found success with sending postcards to friends and acquaintances announcing their new position.

3. Buy Professional Clothes

If you don?t already have them, purchase professional clothing. Always arrive for work appearing clean and professional, since you only get one chance to make a first impression. Keep your car clean as well, since many clients will want to ride with you rather than follow you in their vehicle when they go to see a home for sale.

4. Advertise

Advertise, advertise, advertise. After contacting those you know, many offices will ask you to make cold calls in order to establish a customer base. In addition to cold calling, mail flyers or hang them on door knobs, purchase newspaper space, radio time, and any other type of advertising you can afford. Remember that establishing your customer base can take time, so prepare yourself financially.

5. Hold Open Houses

Volunteer to hold open houses or assist colleagues with showings as much as possible. Some offices also offer certain times when real estate professionals can be the ?realtor of the hour?. During these periods, all incoming calls are forwarded to the realtor on duty. This is a great way to establish new customers, so be sure to take advantage of as much call time as you can.

6. Make Contacts

Not only focus on building your customer base, but your home builder contacts as well. Home builders?are the ones that supply you with homes to sell to those customers. Having a solid relationship with any home builder will help your career in the right direction.

Remember that the real estate market is highly dependent upon our economy. Be patient, determined, and out going in order to obtain success. Your new career can be a bit intimidating at first, but if you jump right in, you will be comfortable in no time.

The Best Guide On How To Be Successful In Internet Marketing

Posted by Heinlein Joseph on Jan 21, 2013 in Internet Marketing |

A collection of tips on how to begin internet marketing, makes the perfect starting point for a beginner to emerge and hopefully begin marketing their own website much smoother. Below is just such a collection that will hopefully assist the eager novice into eventually becoming a pro, when it comes to internet marketing.

Tailor your internet marketing to target your specific audience. Websites such as Google or Facebook will allow you to customize who sees your ads. By tailoring your internet ads to each demographic, you can easily market your products in ways that will grab customers? attention and bring them to your business.

There are many great benefits to internet marketing and that is why you shouldn?t overlook this option. The most important aspect of marketing through the internet is that it has a very large market penetration. This means that it is easily shown to a large number of potential consumers easily.

If you want to get more advertising for your site you can offer visitors a discount for items you are selling in exchange for them placing links to your site on their page. That way they will be motivated enough by the discounts and get you free advertising and you will get more traffic.

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, create and utilize a variety of banner ads that are distinctive from one another. You might also consider a rotating banner, which is a tool that periodically cycles through a series of different banners. This is a good option for ad space on your own website or ads placed on others? sites.

If you are short of time, use paid advertising. Investing in paid advertising, such as text links, banners, and pop-up windows, can increase the amount of relevant traffic to your website and subsequently, the number of orders placed. The most popular online advertising company is Google AdWords, and they offer ad campaigns to suit any budget.

Use the word fast in your marketing to get people off their feet and to your order pages. The psychology of marketing is a must now for all internet marketers. Using the word fast in your ad copy excites people. The more excited they are, the more orders you will get.

Because so many people market online nowadays, your job is to be unique. Don?t just have a simple banner with simple text and dull colors. Have something flashy, catchy and unique. Most people online, tune out advertisements simply because they see hundreds of similar ones every day. Make your ad stand out and you?ll likely get a click.

Take advantage of your relationship with other respected online companies and retailers by offering free advertising space. This is an excellent option because it allows your business to benefit from the respectability and favorable reputation of the other party. Furthermore, other advertisers may see that you have partnered with a very credible company and will want to advertise on your site as well.

If you are marketing a product online, trying mixing up your sale phrases. For example, saying they should ?invest in this product? makes the item seem like an investment in their future rather than money they are spending now. You can complement this approach by including testimonials from other customers about how much they?ve earned from your product.

As you can see from this article, marketing online can greatly help your business? bottom line. With an ever growing population of people using the Internet, marketing online becomes more and more important. If you can follow the proper procedures outlined in this article you will be well on your way to marketing and advertising successfully online.

Runbo presents affordable, yet tough Android smartphones at CES

The name Runbo doesn't ring any bells, does it? That's because behind it is a Chinese company focused on making phones you can't really classify as high-end. Yet several of its offerings were present at CES and among them were these two quite peculiar Android smartphones.

As you can probably tell by the way they look, the Runbo X3 and Runbo X5 smartphones are built tough. Even drops onto concrete probably won't be enough to cause any serious damage. Both handsets are IP67-certified, which means that they should survive after a dunk in water for up to 30 minutes at a depth down to 3 feet. You also get a walkie-talkie that works at a distance of up to 10 kilometers, hence the massive antenna you see in the photo.

When it comes to hardware specs, the two smartphones don't have much to shine with, but they aren't too bad either. The Runbo X5 comes with a 4.3-inch WVGA screen and a 1GHz dual-core chip by Mediatek. There's also an 8MP camera on its back, a front-facing camera, and a built-in loudspeaker that should be surprisingly loud. The 4GB of storage can be expanded with the use of a microSD card, while the gigantic 3,800mAh battery will keep you running for quite some time.?

As for the Runbo X3, it is very similar to its sibling from a technical standpoint. The most significant difference between the two is that the screen has been shrunk down to 3.5 inches in order to allow for a portrait QWERTY keyboard to be added. Just like the Runbo X5, the X3 comes with stock Android 4.0.4 ICS.

Last but not least, there's the Runbo X1, pictured on the right. You probably won't be too excited about it, however, as it is just a humble feature phone. Still, it also has an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance, and should be able to withstand at least as much beating as its bigger brothers.

Runbo is offering the X3 and X5 to U.S. buyers for less than $400 on eBay, which is actually a pretty reasonable price for a tough Android smartphone. Check them out at the link below in case you're interested.

So Obama is Antagonizing Israel Again

There?s a little war brewing in Algeria and Mali, French-led, against the al Qaeda terrorist groups that are becoming entrenched in the ?new? Libya, which is next door to Algeria. The ?new? Libya is the afterbirth of the Obama-Jarrett-Rice-Clinton air war against Ghaddafi. The lack of a real national government has allowed Libya to become the latest incubator of Islamic terrorism. The war there is or may be spreading into Algeria. Our president has told us that al Qaeda is ?on the run.? He was lying.

Against that backdrop and the usual Arab threats to annihilate the tiny non-Arab state in their midst, Israel is pushing ahead with settlements outside the Green Line. The Palestinian Authority, supposedly Israel?s ?partner? for peace, suggested this week that there is no two-state solution, and that Israel must therefore eventually be destroyed.

Maybe President Barack Obama didn?t hear that. Maybe he missed it in his daily blog reading since it wasn?t posted on ESPN and had nothing to do with composite or fake girlfriends, and no one thought to text it to him. At any rate, he didn?t react to it. Instead he reportedly trained his critical eye not on the Palestinian leaders who are threatening Israel, but on Israel?s PM.

US President Barack Obama has stated repeatedly in private conversations that ?Israel doesn?t know what its own best interests are,? regarding Jerusalem?s advancement of new settlement plans, influential Jewish American columnist Jeffrey Goldberg reported Tuesday.

Following the November 29 UN vote to upgrade the Palestinians to non-member observer state status, Israel announced that 3,000 housing units would be built in areas beyond the Green Line, and zoning and planning for thousands of other units throughout Judea and Samaria would be authorized, including in the controversial project between Jerusalem and Ma?aleh Adumim called E1.

In his weekly Bloomberg column published on Tuesday, Goldberg wrote: ?When informed about the Israeli decision, Obama, who has a famously contentious relationship with the prime minister, didn?t even bother getting angry. He told several people that this sort of behavior on [Prime Minister Binyamin] Netanyahu?s part is what he has come to expect, and he suggested that he has become inured to what he sees as self-defeating policies of his Israeli counterpart.?

Maybe Obama knows as much about the real Middle East as he knows about firearms, a subject in which he constantly misuses terms like ?clip? instead of ?magazine? and mistakes civilian rifles for weapons of war.

Israeli PM Bibi Netanyahu noticed Obama?s one-sided criticism. He didn?t appreciate it.

A day after American Jewish columnist Jeffrey Goldberg quoted President Barack Obama as saying that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu does not understand what is in Israel?s best interest, Netanyahu visited the Gaza border on Wednesday and essentially shot back, ?Yes I do.?

During the visit to the headquarters of the IDF?s Gaza Division, Netanyahu was shown figures indicating that December was the quietest month in the South ? in terms of rocket and terrorist attacks from the Gaza Strip ? in the past 12 years, since January 2001.

?I think everyone understands that only Israel?s citizens are those who will be the ones to determine who faithfully represents Israel?s vital interests,? the prime minister said in his first direct response to Obama?s reported criticism.

Netanyahu said over the past four years he had withstood ?enormous pressure,? including demands that Israel curb its pressure on Iran, withdraw to the pre- 1967 lines, divide Jerusalem and stop building in the eastern part of the capital.

?We fended off all those pressures, and I will continue to stand firm on Israel?s vital interests for the security of the citizens of Israel,? he declared.

Before his re-election, Barack Obama was always less than friendly to Netanyahu. After his re-election, to suggest that Bibi and the Israeli people don?t know what?s good for them is equal parts arrogant and foolish. Israel is only becoming more isolated because it no longer has a trusted friend in the White House. Instead it has a hostile armchair critic. Israel probably understands that, and the implications that come with it, much better even than Obama himself does.

Justice System 'Overreach Blamed in Suicide of Open-Access Technology Activist

Aaron Swartz faced an imminent trial for having downloaded some 4 million articles from a not-for-profit scholarly archive, and a possible penalty of 35 years in prison and a $1M fine, which some call disproportionate to his actions

?

This weekend, the Internet world mourned one of its heroes: Aaron Swartz, 26, a prodigy, programmer and well-known Internet activist,?who hanged himself in his New York apartment on Friday. Swartz was to face an imminent trial?for having downloaded some 4 million articles?from JSTOR, a not-for-profit scholarly archive hosted by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He faced extraordinarily severe charges ? see?here?and?here?? carrying a possible penalty of 35 years in prison, and more than US$1 million in fines. Swartz is reported to have suffered from serious depression, but some ? including his immediate family ? have explicitly alleged that the pending charges contributed to his suicide. (Btw; serious depression is more common than one might think; see ?Global survey reveals impact of disability? though few commit suicide.)

Online commentators have expressed indignation at the disproportion between the charges and Swartz?s alleged act.?Lawrence Lessig, a law researcher at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has posted a must-read analysis?here. Alex Stamos, an expert witness for the defence in the case,?also argues that the charges were over the top. Other analyses worth reading include those from?Glenn Greenwald?and from? The Economist.

In?a statement, Swartz?s family?said: ?Aaron?s death is not simply a personal tragedy. It is the product of a criminal justice system rife with intimidation and prosecutorial overreach. Decisions made by officials in the Massachusetts U.S. Attorney?s office and at MIT contributed to his death. The US Attorney?s office pursued an exceptionally harsh array of charges, carrying potentially over 30 years in prison, to punish an alleged crime that had no victims.?

Rafael Reif, the president of MIT, in a?statement?yesterday said: ??I want to express very clearly that I and all of us at MIT are extremely saddened by the death of this promising young man who touched the lives of so many. It pains me to think that MIT played any role in a series of events that have ended in tragedy.? He also announced that he had asked Hal Abelson, a leading computer scientist, to assess MIT?s response in the case. JSTOR also released a?statement, which mentioned its widely appreciated decision not to pursue charges in the case after Swartz returned the files he had taken.

Meanwhile, a campaign has also started on Twitter calling for researchers to post their papers openly online in reaction and commemoration ? at hashtag?#pdftribute.

In passing, Swartz was a past invitee to Science Foo Camp, an annual invitation-only informal gathering of hundreds of leading scientists, technologists and other leading creative lights, organized by?Nature?in collaboration with Google and O?Reilly Media ? see?here?and?here. See Swartz?s own account of part of the 2007 meet?here.

French president bares tough side in Africa fights

PARIS (AP) ? Bombing militants in Mali may be the most popular thing Francois Hollande has done as France's president.

The bespectacled and self-described "normal" man who was once lampooned as resembling flimsy yellow custard, is now flexing France's military muscle against al-Qaida-linked Islamist extremists who he believes pose a threat to northwest Africa, France and Europe. And in doing so, he has nearly united the French political class.

"His hand didn't tremble," Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said of Hollande's order Friday for French troops to fight the insurgents blamed for kidnapping, drug-running and forcing oppressive rules on the people of Mali, a former French colony. "The president made his decision knowing the risks it implies."

Nearly simultaneously, across Africa's midsection, French commandos led a raid in Somalia in a failed effort to free a comrade held hostage there for 3-1/2 years. Officials said 17 Islamists and two commandos died and that they believe the hostage was killed. Hollande is said to have given the green light for that high-risk mission last month.

Both the Mali mission, which entered a fourth day Monday with continued French air strikes, and the Somalia raid bared an unfamiliar side of the French leader, who took power eight months ago and had seen his popularity slide.

For all his qualities, few French fancy Hollande as a warmonger. As Interior Minister Manuel Valls, quoted in Le Monde newspaper, said of his boss: "It's in exceptional and difficult times that a statesman emerges."

The French appear to welcome this new, hard Hollande in the guise of terrorism-fighter-in-chief. But it's not clear whether he can revive his own popularity in the long-term.

"It's too early to draw conclusions about the benefits for Francois Hollande's image. We need to wait and see how the situation in Mali evolves," said Ifop agency pollster Frederic Daby. "But what we know is that Francois Hollande is benefiting from a movement of national unity ? a sacred union because French interests are at stake."

An Ifop poll released Monday found that 63 percent of respondents in France supported the intervention in Mali. The poll of 1,021 adults was taken this weekend; the margin of error was about 3 percentage points.

The head of the conservative opposition, Jean-Francois Cope, said France's air strikes in Mali had "complete international legitimacy," and even far-right leader Marine Le Pen called the intervention "legitimate."

Hollande's order for the Mali operation is particularly perilous because seven French hostages are in the hands of the same al-Qaida-linked jihadist groups that France's troops are fighting in vast northern Mali.

Hollande's poll numbers have been on a steady slide ever since he handily beat conservative incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy in May's presidential election, becoming only the second Socialist head of state in France in more than 50 years.

He has been assailed for inconsistent handling of the economy. His backpedaling on campaign promises ? like one to freeze fuel prices ? or watering down others has frustrated many voters. And his romantic partner Valerie Trierweiler caused him no small embarrassment in June by tweeting a comment that was widely read as a nasty swipe against his ex-partner.

Hollande's headaches as president have mainly been domestic, including a jobless rate around 10 percent, few signs of economic rebound and a full-bodied debate on his plan to legalize gay marriage and thus allow same-sex couples to adopt and conceive children. On Sunday, hundreds of thousands of people marched in protest against that idea.

Critics say Hollande cherry-picked the easiest and most politically palatable reforms proposed in a November report that he commissioned on ways to rejuvenate competitiveness in France's moribund economy ? backing down from other ideas amid howls from labor groups that are a pillar of his leftist coalition.

Magazine covers have recently portrayed him under headlines such as "Hollande: The Surrender" and "The Rejection."

Hollande also took office vowing to end a policy of "Francafrique," a paternalistic French buzzword for a cushy and corrupt relationship between political and economic elites in France and its former African colonies

Those hopes all but vanished on Friday ? even if Hollande insists he still wants Mali and its African neighbors to take command of counterterrorism efforts in the region in the future.

Internationally, until now, Hollande's most significant decision was pulling French combat troops out of Afghanistan last month ? far ahead of the 2014 timetable of the United States and France's other NATO allies.

Until last week, Hollande had been talking tough both about the terror threat in Mali and against President Bashar Assad's repression in Syria's civil war, but hadn't taken any major concrete action. He'd repeatedly said that France would back up African troops in Mali, but not send troops to fight.

As with some other countries, international issues tend to have less impact on the French president's image than do pocketbook concerns such as jobs.

Sarkozy, a brash, hard-nosed former interior minister, put France in a leading role along with Britain and the United States in NATO's air campaign in Libya that helped topple dictator Moammar Gadhafi last year. But he got little lift in the polls and lost the presidency to Hollande.

Still, Hollande could benefit from countering public expectations about him. Unlike tough-guy Sarkozy, he's better-known for glad-handing crowds than ? as he did this weekend ? looking sternly into TV cameras to defend risky military action and saying France won't give in to terrorists' "blackmail".

Why Microsoft should not have given CES 2013 a miss

Microsoft may have relinquished its starring role in America's gaudiest gadget show a year too early.

After 13 straight years in the spotlight, Microsoft's decision to scale back its presence at this week's International CES deprived the software maker of a prime opportunity to explain and promote a new generation of redesigned computers running its radically remade Windows operating system.

The missed chance comes at a time when Microsoft Corp. could use a bully pulpit to counter perceptions that Windows 8 isn't compelling enough to turn the technological tide away from smartphones and tablets running software made by Apple Inc. and Google Inc.

"They needed to be at this show in a very big way to show the progress they have made and what is it about 2013 that is going to make consumers really gravitate toward a Windows 8 machine," said technology industry analyst Patrick Moorhead.

Since Windows 8 went on sale in late October, there has been little evidence to suggest the operating system will lift the personal computer industry out of a deepening downturn. Worldwide PC shipments during the final three months of last year dropped 6 percent from the same period in 2011, according to the research firm International Data Corp. The dip occurred despite the bevy of Windows 8 laptops and desktop machines that were on sale during the holiday shopping season.

Microsoft, though, insists things worked out at just fine during CES, even though it didn't have a booth and only had a smattering of executives at the sprawling trade show, which drew some 156,000 people to Las Vegas.

The company, which is based in Redmond, Wash., decided it no longer makes sense to invest as much time and money in CES as it once did. The company says the show's early January slot doesn't mesh with the timing of its major product releases. Windows 8, for instance, was still more than nine months away from hitting the market when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer kicked off last year's CES with a keynote address that was billed as the company's swan song at the show.

"We are very comfortable with our decision," Microsoft spokesman Frank Shaw said. "It has been a productive show for us this year."

Microsoft's retreat from CES puzzled some attendees curious about Windows 8. For instance, when Michael Sullivan showed up at computer maker Asus' booth, which was stocked with Windows 8 computers, there was no one around to discuss the machines or the software.

"This is unusual," said Sullivan, CEO of computer sales firm Spec 4 International Inc. "I don't understand why a successful company isn't bringing executives here."

Asus invited some CES attendees to learn more about Windows 8 at a nearby hotel, away from the show's main trade show. Asus has left its booth unmanned in previous years at CES, but the void wasn't as noticeable when Microsoft's own representatives were canvassing the floor.

NPD DisplaySearch analyst Richard Shim thought Microsoft should have had more people helping to staff its partners' booths because, he said, no one understands how Windows 8 works better than the company that made it.

"Whenever you have a new product rolling out, it's always helpful to communicate your message directly as opposed to counting on your partners," Shim said.

Microsoft elected to curtail its CES presence largely because the show's marketing value has diminished. In recent years, companies such as Apple and Google have shown that they can command more attention by holding their own exclusive events to unveil products just before they go on sale. Neither Apple nor Google had a major presence at CES.

In a sign that it is embracing its rivals' strategy, Microsoft staged separate events last year in Los Angeles and New York to unveil Surface, a Windows-powered tablet computer, and Windows 8.

Nevertheless, both Shim and Moorhead believe would have been better off waiting until after this year's CES to surrender its top billing on the marquee. That way, Ballmer could have used this year's opening CES keynote to talk about Windows 8's advantages as a finished product.

"Ballmer could have talked about the operating system more completely and built more hype around it, especially since Microsoft has been getting beaten up so far over Windows 8's performance," Shim said.

When Ballmer ended Microsoft's 13-year streak of kicking off CES, he was only able to provide a peek at a makeover of the operating system that was still months away from being completed.

Microsoft touts Windows 8 as a breakthrough that will enable people to straddle the divide between personal computers and tablets. The revamped operating system is built to respond to the touch of a finger so it can work on tablet computers while still retaining the ability to respond to commands from keyboards and mice on laptop and desktop machines. To take advantage of Windows 8's versatility, many PC makers are building convertible devices that can work as a tablet or a laptop.

But reviews of the new operating system have been lukewarm. Critics have been panning it as too confusing and cumbersome.

Microsoft used part of a CES technology forum presented by J.P. Morgan to try to build more enthusiasm. The company revealed that 60 million copies of Windows 8 have been sold so far, putting it on the same pace as the previous version - Windows 7 - at the same juncture of its release. But it's unclear how many of those Windows 8 licenses are installed on computers that are still sitting in stores or warehouses.

Investors have been so unimpressed with the reception to the new Windows products that Microsoft's stock price has slipped 4 percent since the operating system's Oct. 26 release. Meanwhile, the bellwether Standard & Poor's 500 index has gained 4 percent. Microsoft's stock closed Friday at $26.83, up 37 cents.

A clearer picture of the early reception to Windows 8 may emerge Jan. 24 when Microsoft is scheduled to report its earnings for the three months spanning the holiday shopping season.

Although he wasn't the main attraction, Ballmer made a cameo appearance during Qualcomm Inc. CEO Paul Jacobs' opening address at this year's show.

Ballmer's acceptance of Qualcomm's invitation to join Jacobs on stage surprised some people because Qualcomm has emerged as a threat to Intel Corp., a longtime Microsoft ally that makes most of the processors in Windows computers. Instead of touting Windows 8, Ballmer spent his time hailing a streamlined version of the operating system, dubbed Windows RT, which runs on tablets using processors that rely on technology designed by ARM, another Intel rival.

Microsoft's top executive in charge of technical strategy appeared on stage at Samsung Electronics' invitation to reveal a Windows phone featuring a flexible color display. The electronics of the phone are in a little box, and the thin, bendable screen is attached to it, looking much like a piece of paper.

That left Intel and other Microsoft partners, including PC makers Samsung, Sony, Asus, Acer and Hewlett-Packard Co., to do most of the boasting about Windows 8 at their own CES booths.

"Our partners are doing that very effectively," Shaw said. "You couldn't walk through the (CES) floor without seeing people doing really interesting things with Windows 8."

But there were other times when it appeared Microsoft's partners could have used some help.

Sony exhibitor John Guzman, for instance, seemed stumped when an Associated Press reporter visited the company's CES booth and asked whether a machine running Windows 8 or the more advanced Windows 8 Pro would be a better fit for journalistic work.

"That is more of a Microsoft question," Guzman said, adding that no Microsoft representatives were around.

3 Things To Look For When Choosing Personal Loan | Eric Finance

3 Things To Look For When Choosing Personal LoanWhile personal loans are helpful for clearing debts, particular care must be taken when choosing which loan to go for. With the vast amount of loans to choose from, you could be tempted to simply go for the one with the lowest interest rate. While low interest rates are good, there are other factors to consider which may even override the attractiveness of the rates. Here are three things you should look for before settling on a personal loan.

Payment Holidays? Where?s The Catch?

This a catchy feature we often see attached to not only loan products, but also to cars for sale and furniture. Get it today and pay nothing until three months? time. Many people meet such offers with glee, and go on to take advantage of (what they think is) a great offer. Now that is a mistake! These loans will most times start to accrue interest from the very first day. The danger here is that the borrower may mistakenly think that he or she can go on a spending spree because they have a sizable sum of cash at their disposal.

Never take such an ad at face value. As is usually the advice when signing on the dotted line, read the fine print. If the terms and conditions of the loan do not explicitly state that no interest will be charged for the period advertised, you will be charged. In such a case, ignore the payment holiday offer and start making payments on the loan from the very first month to avoid any hiked interest.

Fixed Rate Or Variable Rate?

Select a personal loan that carries a fixed rate and not a variable one. Fixed rate interest allows you to repay the loan in equal installments with the interest remaining the same throughout the term of the loan. A variable interest rate does not remain stationery, and places you at a disadvantage should it increase rather than decrease. Even in cases where the interest rate does decrease, unfair lenders will hike the rates just the same to exploit their clients and make a profit.

With a loan that carries a variable interest, you will be in a disadvantaged position not knowing how much you will be required to pay from month to month. This sort of uncertainty is not conducive to good budgetary practices, which is crucial in your bid to manage your money and become debt free. Pay particular attention to the terms and conditions that relate to interest rates.

What About Redemption Penalties?

Always read the small print. It is something that is really annoying and time consuming, but ignoring it can come back to haunt you. Redemption penalties are one of those elements that are usually well hidden in the fine print. These penalties may stipulate that you will be charged if you try to pay off your loan early. You can be charged as much as one months? interest for trying to pay early. There are lenders who do not apply this charge to their terms and conditions. Spend some time to seek out a lender who does not add redemption penalties.

Similar to any legal document, personal loan documents should be thoroughly scrutinized for hidden terms and conditions before you sign on the dotted line. A little extra time of scrutiny can save you great emotional and financial pains later on.

Hong Kong proposes restrictions on public access to company data

HONG KONG (Reuters) - Hong Kong has proposed a new law that would allow company directors to keep their personal details secret, after a series of media reports revealed information about the wealth and assets of some senior Chinese officials.

Under the planned rule, directors could apply to have their residential addresses and full identity card numbers blocked from public view, according to a document submitted to the Legislative Council.

Mining of company data has helped news organizations uncover sensitive data on business and political leaders in recent years, which has led to the publication of stories embarrassing to some members of China's elite.

Last year, Reuters traced companies belonging to Xu Ming, a key business ally of disgraced Chinese politician Bo Xilai, through his Hong Kong holding companies.

In October, the New York Times, citing corporate and regulatory records, said the family of China's outgoing Premier Wen Jiabao had amassed $2.7 billion in wealth at one point.

Bloomberg News last year relied on Hong Kong and Chinese identity card numbers revealed in corporate filings to highlight the business relationships and assets of the family of China's incoming president, Xi Jinping.

China's new leadership, which was anointed in November, has shown few signs of steering a path of political reform or allowing freer expression.

Access to the websites of Bloomberg and the New York Times has been blocked since they published the sensitive articles.

Hong Kong's Financial Services and the Treasury Bureau as well as the Companies Registry, which have proposed the restrictions, want to bring them into effect in the first quarter of 2014.

Neither organization was immediately available to comment.

In November 2011, Reuters found a residential address of a key person in the Olympus Corp accounting scandal after searching company filings in Hong Kong.
