What is the Difference Between Marketing and Sales ...

?Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising.?
? Mark Twain

Marketing, over sales, is the broader term and marketing is about the branding, advertising and public relations aspects of the business. Sales is then an activity of marketing ? it is the closing of the deal. So marketing creates the demand and sales secures that demand for the business.

For a business to be successful, both a marketing and sales focus is required and neither are mutually exclusive. Because they are so intertwined Sales and Marketing are often seen as the same and are often handled by the same department or person.

Creating a balance between these two areas is key for the success of your business.

From your marketing strategy through to closing a sale, the rule of thumb is that 8 contacts are required to take that potential client through to becoming a paying customer.

It is so important that your business develops a process that melds sales and marketing, this then enables your business to reach customers at the cold, warm, and hot lead levels.

Sales and Marketing Strategies

  • Cold Leads ? At this point the strategy is a marketing focused strategy, educating and creating awareness of your product or service in the market by direct mailing online and in print.
  • Warm Leads ? Once your leads are ?warm? you need to follow up and at this point the strategy switches to sales. The focus then becomes one of closing the deal and ensuring contracts are signed and a relationship is built with the client.

Often the Sales and Marketing team will work alongside one another to ensure potential clients become clients, but keeping the balance is important and reviewing the partnership is critical. For further advice and information on this topic and many others see Mobilize Mail.

    Beans show promise in diabetes

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Downing a cup of beans or lentils every day may help people with type 2 diabetes control their blood sugar and possibly reduce their risk of heart attacks and stroke, according to a small study out today.

Researchers found that compared with a diet rich in whole grains, getting a daily dose of legumes led to small drops in an important measure of blood sugar as well as in blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

After three months on the bean diet, study participants' estimated 10-year risk of cardiovascular disease had fallen from 10.7 percent to 9.6 percent, according to findings in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"Legumes are good protein sources, and proteins tend to dampen the blood glucose response and they lower blood pressure," said Dr. David Jenkins of St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto, who led the work.

"They are also good sources of fiber and that tends to be associated with lower cholesterol," he told Reuters Health.

Jenkins said that even though the drops were not huge, they were impressive in part because the whole-grain comparison diet is a healthy one and in part because people in the study were already on diabetes and blood pressure drugs.

"We hope that this could be the point that allows you to delay medication use," Jenkins said. But, he added, "if we can keep people on medications throughout their life and not have complications of diabetes, we have won."

Legumes such as beans, chickpeas and lentils are already recommended for diabetics due to their low glycemic index, a measure of how far and how fast a given food sends up blood sugar. But there are few studies of their direct effects in diabetes, according to Jenkins and his colleagues.

They divided 121 people with diabetes into two groups, one of which was instructed to up their intake of cooked legumes by at least a cup a day. The other was told to eat more whole wheat products to boost their fiber intake.

After three months, the researchers found that hemoglobin A1c levels had dropped from 7.4 percent to 6.9 percent in people eating beans, while it had fallen from 7.2 percent to 6.9 percent in those getting extra whole wheat.

The number reflects the average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months and experts recommend keeping it under seven percent.

"We were able to drop them into the 6s where you want them," said Jenkins. He added that U.S. health regulators consider a change of 0.3 or 0.4 percentage points to be "therapeutically relevant."

The larger reduction seen with legumes as opposed to whole wheat - 0.2 percentage points - was statistically reliable, but it is unclear exactly what it means for diabetics.

There was no reduction in blood pressure with extra whole wheat, but a drop from 122 to 118 points in systolic blood pressure (the top number) with legumes and from 72 to 69 in diastolic (the bottom number). Blood pressure readings are considered normal if they are no more 120 over 80.

Given the lower blood pressure, Jenkins and his colleagues calculated that diabetics getting a daily dose of beans would lower their 10-year risk of heart attack or stroke by just under one percentage point compared with people eating whole wheat.

By comparison, cholesterol-lowering drugs are thought to cut 10-year cardiovascular risk by about 20 percent - or two percentage points in people with a baseline risk of 10 percent.

The study didn't find any more gastrointestinal complaints in the legume group, apparently deflating the notion that downing lots of beans leads to excessive flatulence. Jenkins did warn, however, that the comparison group also got a lot of fiber, which could have drowned out a potential effect.

He said people across the globe have recently shifted away from eating legumes.

"The public should be doing some preventive strategies using these foods," he said. "We are not introducing some novel "Frankenfood" into the diet - this is really deep, traditional stuff."

An editorial published with the study notes that nutrition therapy is effective in diabetes, but questioned whether people with the disorder can eat enough legumes to reap the benefits.

Marion Franz of Nutrition Concepts by Franz Inc in Minneapolis, who wrote the editorial, also said it's unclear whether the potential effect of legumes is related to their low glycemic index or their high fiber content.

Four Pointers to Improve Your Office Culture

Are your employees happy at their jobs?

With all the stress of the modern career these days, not to mention the added work load and extra hours the average employee is expected to work, it is not hard to understand that the stress has negatively taken its toll. Statistically speaking, they're less likely to be happy today than they were 20 years ago. In 1986, the Conference Board, a leading research group, conducted its first survey of job satisfaction. At the time, just over 61 percent of respondents claimed to like their jobs. While far from perfect, that number is impressive compared to the most recent Conference Board poll that finds only 47 percent of people are happy at work.

Thankfully, this statistic is far from universal. There are many companies that go the extra mile to provide a pleasant office environment for their employees. So you ask, how might I add a little more enjoyment to our workplace? Below are four tips you can take from the best performers and implement their strategies into your own workplace.

    1. Create Incentive

Creating incentive can be as future-focused as a cash reward system for exceeding performance expectations, or as simple as awarding the top closer of the day with an extra-long lunch break tomorrow. Giving employees any kind of privilege or compensation for going above and beyond is easy to implement and it can create an atmosphere of friendly competition that encourages everyone to bring their A-game every day.

    2. Develop a Culture of Leadership

Good leaders make good teams. A company that invests in quality leadership and gives employees a clear path to leadership roles is a company that has a guarantee of excellence in teamwork. It's worthwhile to develop programs that track what makes managers successful in your company and how to teach tomorrow's managers those skills. And a good leader takes responsibility for him/herself. Our team building events are based on having every participant see how their actions and attitude effect the level of communication in the group. Along with leadership comes individual responsibility and that?s where the real change can occur.

    3. Promote Self-Improvement

A study conducted at the University of North Texas in 2008 found that people who feel that their needs for achievement are being met are less likely to leave their current employer. It also finds a close link between that sense of achievement and the presence of effective training within the company. A company can benefit greatly by making sure everyone feels confident about the tasks they do and giving everyone the opportunity to learn new skills that can lead to greater responsibility. At a local restaurant that I frequent the current manager came up the ranks starting as a busboy. His efforts to learn and grow were clearly met with equal levels of responsibility.

    4. Perks Work

At a lot of today's most innovative offices, company perks get a lot of love from employees. Everything from gift cards to gym membership stipends and Foosball tables count as office perks. Most importantly, a perk needs to be different than an incentive. Instead of being a reward for good performance, a perk is just a treat an employee gets for being a part of the team. While doing freelance production work in NYC, one of the companies I worked for catered in lunch for the entire group every day. One day it was BBQ, another day it was panini?s. It was definitely always good and a great way to make that company more than ?just another job.?

The unifying concept behind all of these workplace-improving ideas is to do more than just the basics. Each one is about adding something to the culture of the office and giving something of value to employees. By investing in the happiness and ambition of your employees, you create an environment of loyalty and satisfaction that pays off for everyone in the long run.

    Environmental Careers

If you're more suited to the outdoors than being stuck inside an office all day, but are unsure of what jobs are out there, we've put together a few examples to help. Whether you left schools with GCSE's, or University with a degree, there are many options for everyone, from being a Zoologist to joining the trade of many tree surgeons.

    Zoologist

If you've left University with a relevant degree, you might want to look at becoming a Zoologist. This is a very rewarding job and can lead into many different career paths, with the opportunity to travel around the world working with animals.

    Tree Surgeon

This career choice requires no formal qualifications, but you will be starting at the bottom and working your way up whilst learning on the job. Listed as the second most dangerous job in the world, this one isn't for the faint hearted, but the benefits are that you get to work in the fresh air every day and have the thrill of climbing up and down trees with other tree surgeons.

    Farming

If you fancy a rural setting then look no further than farming! You can complete a college course, or get on the job training with a farmer. You can even go to a University such as the Royal Agricultural College to gain formal qualifications. The perfect career choice for those who enjoy animals, or spending a lot of time in the outdoors.

    Marine Biologist

For the seafarers amongst us this is a great career path for those interested in marine life and the biology and conservation of the marine environment. With a very strong focus on science, you will need to be interested and passionate about science and research; it isn't all just playing with dolphins in marine biology.

    Meteorologist

As an atmospheric scientist you will be analysing large amounts of data, so you'll need a mathematical mind. Although it's mainly measuring the weather and weather patterns, you'll also be responsible for contacting the relevant authorities if there are any extreme weather patterns that could potentially harm people (i.e.; hurricanes, tornadoes).

    Environmental Engineer

As an environmental engineer you'll be tackling problems such as recycling, public health, and water and air pollution control, whilst on an excellent salary. This career will also be very research based and you will need to analyse the situation before coming up with a solution for the client.

Artemis Tree Services provide their clients with a full range of professional tree care services to ensure your trees, shrubs and hedges remain healthy and beautiful. For more on tree surgeons in London visit http://www.artemistrees.com

RD Meyer Writes: Author Interview - Hugh Howey

I'm incredibly honored to interview Hugh Howey, author of?awesome?stories?like Wool, the Molly Fyde saga, and I, Zombie.? Wool has recently been optioned by Ridley Scott and Steve Zaillian for a potential feature film, and it was just featured as the Kindle Daily Deal on Amazon.? Please check out his website, as well as his work on Amazon.

1.? What inspired you to become a writer?

My love of reading. I think when you enjoy something so much, you aspire to create some of your own. I found early on that I enjoyed relating stories, both real events from my life and made up tales, and so I began to dream of one day becoming an author. Not that I thought it might really happen!

2.? How did you come up with the idea for Wool?? Did you envision it as a series, or was it one tale that people demanded more of?

It started with this question of whether or not we can know the world by staring at a single screen. It?s something that occurred to me from watching the advent of 24-hour news. In my travels, I?ve seen one sort of world, a pretty nice place. On the news, I see something largely horrific. What does this bias toward what?s newsworthy do to us?

And so I thought about a society that can only see this dismal view of their landscape. They live underground. They aren?t allowed to question what lies outside their limited scope. But there are those who do, and their punishment is to be let out to see for themselves.

3.? I see from your website that you're working on several books(including two in the Wool saga).? How do you plan out your work?? Do you outline or simply write as the words come to you?

I do a lot of both. I outline the general plot, and then allow the characters to roam freely as they go from a set beginning to a set end. New and unsuspected twists pop up, and I work to incorporate them. I think the best stories are told if they are well thought out and planned ahead of time, but I think the best writing happens when you allow the characters some liberty and just go where they take you. The trick is to find a balance that works.

4.? How have your travels over the ocean affected your books?

Immensely. My view of the human condition would be less well informed if I had stayed in one place. And my travels put my life in jeopardy several times, which gave me an intense appreciation for its worth and for what that sort of danger feels like.

Then there?s the characters and the cultures I encountered throughout the islands and abroad. They all find their way into my stories. Fact is far crazier than fiction, so all I have to do is tone down what I see and experience, and it makes for unbelievable drama on the page.

5.? What do you think of the current market transformation concerning the shift between traditional and indie publishing?

I think it?s wonderful. There are more choices for both the reader and the writer. And the shift is benefiting traditional publishing as well. The large publishers are loathe to take risks, and by signing successful indies, they are able to promote works that readers have signaled they want more of. The market, in essence, is becoming smarter and more efficient.

My message to aspiring writers is to view the indie route as the best way to begin one?s journey as an author. There?s zero risk. A book that fails on the open market can be unpublished down the road. A book that fails with a traditional publisher can make it more difficult to get a second contract. Now that the stigma is gone, now that publishers no longer fear taking on independent authors, what used to be the path of last resort is now the best path to success. You can languish in slush piles or you can prove yourself with your audience. Wool would never have been published by a major press. Neither would many of the erotica works tearing up the charts these days. Only the readers know what they want. The market is now designed to cater to them. Everyone should find this exciting.

6.? A lot of writers hate the business side of writing.? What do you think is necessary for a writer to be successful in getting his or her career off the ground?

I think you have to love every aspect of writing if you hope to be successful. I have friends who are traditionally published, and they have a lot of the same obligations that I do. I get requests from my overseas publishers to film a video of me speaking to a particular audience, or write this letter to book reps, or okay this cover, or do this bit of social networking. It keeps me very busy. So I don?t think there?s this huge difference in the amount of work necessary to be successful. If you are with a big publisher and all you do is write, you don?t do any marketing or promotion, I don?t think you?ll gain a very wide audience.

I should also note that I still view writing more as a hobby than a career. A hobby is something you love, something you would do even if you weren?t getting paid. It?s healthier and more honest for me to view my own writing in this manner. If everyone stopped buying my books, I?d still be writing.

7.? Editing our work is one of the hardest things for a writer to do, especially a newbie.? Describe your editing process.

I do 7 or 8 full passes through my work, from rough revision to hunting for typos. Then I pass the work off to my wife and mother, who mark it up with all the problems they find. I fix these, then send the work to a dozen or so beta readers, all of whom find issues. I fix these, and then I publish the work. Of course, errors still creep in there (where the hell do they come from?!), so I make corrections to the ebook over time as readers point out errors. It?s a lot of work, but I would do most of this before submitting to an agent or publisher if I wasn?t self-published. There?s this perception that other authors get to write rough drafts and send them somewhere to be polished to perfection. That doesn?t happen.

8.? What kind of books do you like to read?? What's your favorite and why?

Non-fiction, mostly. I?m curious. I enjoy learning. My writing is full of the things I encounter in history books, works on human psychology, biographies, and the like. I grew up reading science fiction and fantasy, went through a long phase of gobbling up the classics, but now I mostly read non-fiction.

9.? How influential has your wife been in both inspiring your ideas and supporting your career?

Oh, she?s been amazing. My muse and my first beta reader. She has been very tolerant of my desire to live in small, affordable homes so I could squeeze by working part time in low-paying jobs while I concentrate on my writing. And she has been equally tolerant of all the new demands on my time and my frequent travels. But I think it helps that she?s a fan of my writing. She often complains that she can?t find anything to read as good as my rough drafts. Then again, she keeps telling me that I get handsomer as I get older, which I know isn?t the case, so maybe it?s a bunch of baloney!

10.? What advice would you give to a newbie writer just starting out?

Ask yourself why you are writing. Is it to get rich? You?ll be disappointed. Is it to amass legions of readers? Again, that?s not a goal you?re likely to meet. And it isn?t because success is rare, it?s because I firmly believe that what you write and how you write are determined by why you write. This is true for me, and I suspect it?s true in general.

Write because you love it. Write to tell the stories you wish were out there, as a reader. Write for that audience of one, that single stranger who will pick up your work and find that it resonates with them. Write beautifully and tell interesting stories. If you do that, you can?t fail. If your motivation is to be happy while writing, success is guaranteed.

This is how I approach it. It?s a hobby. Like gardening. Could I buy my vegetables at the store for less than the time and effort cost me to grow my own? Of course. Could someone who enjoys fishing save themselves similarly by going to the market? Yes. But that?s not why we garden and why we fish. It isn?t why I write.

Device to help stutterers: Interdisciplinary team developing prosthetic as part of a complete treatment program

ScienceDaily (Oct. 17, 2012) ? Drawing on one another's expertise, a trio of University of Mississippi faculty members from different areas of campus has created a patent-pending device that could change the lives of people who stutter.

Paul Goggans, an electrical engineering professor, developed the prosthetic device, about the size of a cell phone, with Greg Snyder, associate professor of communications sciences and disorders, and Dwight Waddell, associate professor of health, exercise science and recreation management. The friends began working on the device after Snyder, himself a lifelong stutterer, demonstrated how he could speak much more fluently simply by feeling his throat while he and Waddell chatted over coffee.

"By feeling my throat vibrate when I speak, I get tactile speech feedback, which significantly reduces my stuttering," Snyder said. "Dwight immediately understood my application of speech feedback and neural circuitry, and he then approached Paul, who agreed to make the device development a senior-level design project in his class."

Since that time, the team has been focused on supporting and empowering the stuttering community by fighting social stigma and challenging the normal remedies associated with stuttering. "Our device is portable, battery-powered and easy to use," said Goggans, professor of electrical engineering and lead partner in the instrument's design and fabrication. "These are important attributes because other behavioral treatments for stuttering are more intense; they require too much concentration and are exhausting."

A prototype of the device was presented Tuesday (Oct. 16) as a "Hot Topic" at the 2012 Society of Neuroscience conference, which runs Oct. 13-17 in New Orleans. The paper is among 150 selected from thousands of submissions. An audience of about 33,000 neuroscientists and media representatives is expected at the conference.

Even after a long day of speech therapy, a stutterer might have no progress to show the next day, but the patient is tired because he or she worked so hard, Goggans said.

"This creation is offering a promising alternative that can be discreetly and easily used every day by adults," he said.

While the device does not cure stuttering, it helps the user reduce his or her stuttering frequency and can improve the client's quality of life, Snyder said.

"The team plans to include the prosthetic device within a holistic therapy program to better serve the real-life needs of stuttering clients," he said.

About 1 percent of the global population stutters, representing a dramatically underserved population that has few alternatives available for effective long-term treatment. As a result, the stuttering population often suffers severe social prejudices that hinder educational and occupational opportunities.

"Building confidence and self-esteem in people who stutter is life-changing," Waddell said.

"From childhood, we are told that stuttering is wrong, bad behavior -- that it's a personal weakness and if we would just work a little harder, we would speak fluently," Snyder said. "Even though stuttering is a genetic and neurological condition, the inaccurate and destructive beliefs that children accept as fact follow people through adulthood and can hinder both personal growth and potential."

With funding from a Technology Commercialization Initiative grant from the Division of Technology Management in the UM Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, the idea conceived by Goggans, Synder and Waddell is being turned into a prototype.

"It's not always easy to convince folks that a project is worth doing," Goggans said. "But this one was easy. Simply put, our team wanted to improve the lives of people who stutter."

The patent rights to the device have been licensed to Hyperion Technology Group Inc. of Tupelo.

"We are excited to be working with a local company to commercialize this important technology," said Walt Chambliss, UM director of technology management.

Alice Clark, vice chancellor of research and sponsored programs, expressed support for the trio's invention as an example of interdisciplinary research success.

"This project is a great example of the value of multidisciplinary research in developing a technology that promises to have a transformative impact in society," Clark said. "These researchers with complementary skills in speech therapy, neuroscience and electrical engineering serve as a model of collaborative research on campus."

Though the new device is still being developed and tested, its potential benefit for people who stutter is clear.

"The stigma surrounding stuttering is overwhelming and cruel," Snyder said. "For any number of reasons, I was able to successfully emerge from the challenges of stuttering and have stayed focused on finding a new and better treatment for others. It just makes sense to me that if we can wear prosthetics like eyeglasses to help with our vision and hearing aids to enhance our hearing, then why not a prosthetic to help with speech?"

The Technology Commercialization Initiative at UM is funded by a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration. SBA's funding should not be construed as an endorsement of any products, opinions or services. All SBA-funded projects are extended to the public on a nondiscriminatory basis.
