Beat the summer heat in beautiful Sun Valley Idaho. Mainly known for its winter skiing, Sun Valley Resort is also a summertime jewel.
Making the drive up to Sun Valley is quite a treat, there are many interesting stops to make and the scenery is pleasant. The Resort elevation is 6,000 feet.? Those not wanting to drive may fly into Hailey?s Frieman Memorial Airport serviced by Alaska and Sky West Airlines. Sun Valley Resort offers free shuttle service from Hailey airport. Fee shuttle service is available from Boise airport.
We knew Sun Valley Resort has been a notable get-a-way since its establishment in 1936. Since that time, many celebrities have vacationed here. Still, the manicured grounds and infrastructure placements captivated me. ?
Sun Valley Resort is not your typical mountain ski lodge. The resort is what entrepreneur and founder Averell Harriman wanted it to be the ?American Shangri-La.?
The resort tastefully provides all the amenities you could want for summer fun with a few extras.
Golfers will enjoy both the 18-hole Robert Trent Jr. Trail Creek Course and the 18-hole Elkhorn Course. The whole family can enjoy the Sawtooth Putting Course. The White Cloud 9-hole course with a 360-degree view of the Wood River Valley and majestic mountains is a favorite. There is a stone marker on the fifth tee with ?It isn?t about the golf? inscribed on it.?? ?They offer stay and play golf packages.
Anglers are attracted to the many rivers and streams in the area and on the property. Fly-fishing is big here.
We enjoyed our summertime gondola ride to the top of Bald Mountain. The views are fantastic.? We stuffed ourselves with the casual yet excellent food prepared in the mountain top Roundhouse restaurant. Guests have a choice of dinning outside on the patio, as we did, with exceptional views or inside the historic restaurant built in 1939 with multiple fireplaces and unique furniture.
There are plentiful hiking and biking trails on the mountain. You may bring you bike up on the gondola and ride down. Yes, there are people brave enough to do this.
We joined with other guest strolling through the scenic grounds, shopping in the village, and eating ice cream. There are play areas for the kids and heated pools. The Olympic size pool has just been completely refurbished, even the landscaping.
Sitting on the terrace and watching the ice skaters was my favorite past time. ?You can have Lunch or dinner on the terrace, while watching the champion skaters who come here to practice? What a treat.? The ice is open to the public and you may skate yourself.
Beginning on 4 July, this summer season of ?Sun Valley on Ice? shows every Saturday evening will dazzle guest with their line-up of ice skating Gold Medalist entertainers.
Along with their summer concert series with top music entertainers in the outdoor Sun Valley Pavilion, it is home to America?s largest privately funded free-admission symphony. ?Each year the Symphony Orchestra musicians are carefully chosen. It is comprised of only first or second chair musicians who must audition to secure this covetous position. We chose to sit in the covered pavilion seating, by arriving early, otherwise bring a chair or blanket, sit on the grass under the stars and quietly enjoy the sounds of a top-notch symphony.
If all the above is not enough for you to do you can play tennis, take lessons, or go horseback riding. Free Shuttle buses take guest into town and back for the farmers market and antique shopping. We went to the farmers market but could not take advantage of the produce since we were in a hotel room with no kitchen.
The hotel buildings are spread neatly throughout the property. The first built original hotel of course has the oldest rooms, modern conveniences, and air conditioning. The location is right in front of the ice skating rink. The Sun Valley Lodge and Sun Valley Inn rooms have an old world charm atmosphere in the room d?cor. Other buildings may not have air conditioning, if this is important to you, check before booking your room.
Not to be missed are the pictures that line the hallway walls in the Sun Valley Lodge. The pictures are of different notable people and their families, who have visited including, Presidents, Hollywood celebrities, Athletes and Royalty. They date back to the opening of the resort. We spent a good portion of fun time looking at these historic pictures.
If you want to beat the heat in this cool luxury mountain resort, check on line at www.sunvalleyresort.com for performers and entertainment schedules.
We enjoyed our short stay. There were many things we did not have time to do, however unlike the movie Shangri-La visitors are welcome back.
