7 yoga poses for the office to eliminate pain & stress | Katalin Health ...

By Katalin Rodriguez Ogren, today at 8:44 am

For many office workers sitting at a desk combined with stress leads to a lot of little pains.? So many people experience extreme lower back pain, headaches that stem from neck stiffness or achy knees.? Yoga offers so many positions that can help heal the body and prevent so many of the pains in the muscles and joints.? Sitting for long periods of time combined with stress and even poor posture can be the cause of muscular and joint discomfort.? Here are some stretches that you can do in your office that will not require a mat or for you to change your clothes. ?Many of these stretches and poses are modified. ?But doing each of them for 30-60 second each will absolutely make you feel better. ?Try them today at work and let me know how you feel.

Forward Fold
Like the downward dog, a forward fold is awesome. It can simple drain stress out of the top of your head. Keep your knees slightly bent when you do this fold. Once you have found a comfortable depth, begin breathing deeply. Then shake your head gently 'no.' You will feel anxiety spill out of your body. When standing up, make sure you inhale deep to avoid getting dizzy. Then focus on an object for a moment before moving.
Modified Camel
This is similar to a camel pose. The stretch will open up the shoulders and it would help take some pressure off your lower back. To help the back further you can also lift your hips up off the chair and lower.
Modified Downdog
This is an ideal stretch to do several times throughout the day. This version of the down dog feels great even if you are super flexible. If you are unable to straighten your legs, keep them slightly bent. Lengthen your arms across your desk and press your palms downward. This will open up the shoulders and chest. As you lengthen your arms, think about pulling your hips back away from your desk. You will feel this in your lower back and hamstrings.
Lotus Pose
This cross-legged position is used for meditation in yoga. But it is also great for opening up the hips. If you have a skirt on or pants that are too uncomfortable, you may have to skip this for the day. But sitting in this position and closing your eyes will serve as an amazing re-boost for your day. When you sit, take 10 deep breathes that last 10 seconds long each.
Wrist Stretch
This is the easiest pose and stretch to do many times throughout the day, This stretch can really help you even prevent neck pain.
Neck Stretches
This is an actual series of stretches. This sequence can eliminate neck, shoulder and middle back pain. It can also reduce pain caused from tension that leads to headaches. You will be more successful with this stretch if you take deep breathes.
Modified Balancing Pose
Fold one leg back while holding onto your ankle or calf. This balancing pose should be done while holding onto something. Focus on lengthening the top of the thigh and opening up your hip flexor. If you are in heels I suggest taking them off for ideal stability.

Malaria resurgence is linked to reduction of malaria-control programs

Malaria resurgence is linked to reduction of malaria-control programs [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 23-Apr-2012

Since the 1930s, there have been 75 documented episodes of malaria resurgence worldwide, most of which were linked to weakening of malaria control programs, finds a new study published in BioMed Central's open access journal Malaria Journal. The study, which is allied to the theme of this year's World Malaria Day (25th April 2012) "Sustain Gains, Save Lives: Invest in Malaria", found that the most common reason for weakening of malaria control programs was funding disruptions.

There are over 200 million cases of malaria each year with 85% of all cases being children under five years old and, according to the World Health Organization, in 2010 malaria was responsible for 655 000 deaths worldwide, mostly among African children. Deaths which are unnecessary, because malaria is both preventable and curable.

Low cost treatment is available and simple solutions to prevent the diseases, like insecticide treated mosquito nets and malaria prevention during pregnancy, have all been shown to reduce the number of deaths due to malaria. Initiatives like Roll Back Malaria, set up in 1998, aim to reduce child mortality due to malaria by two thirds, by 2015, using large scale implementation of these simple solutions.

Researchers from the Clinton Health Access Initiative, the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute, the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics and Policy, and the Global Health Group at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) conducted a systematic review of the literature to identify all documented malaria resurgence events where malaria had returned to an area previously under control.

The causes of malaria resurgence were categorized as being due to weakened malaria control programs, increased intensity of malaria transmission (such movement of people or mosquitoes, weather, or changes in land use) , or technical obstacles including resistance of the malaria parasite to drugs. 91% of the 75 resurgence events found were blamed at least in part on the weakening of malaria control programs.

Lead author Justin Cohen, PhD, MPH of the Clinton Health Access Initiative explains, "Malaria control programs have been shown to be extremely successful in reducing the number of cases of malaria to very low levels, but history demonstrates that gains can be lost rapidly if financial and political support is not sustained. Finding ways to ensure continued funding for malaria control today will be crucial to building on the gains of the past decade."

Investments in malaria control have created unprecedented momentum and yielded remarkable returns in the past years. However, the future of anti-malaria programs is uncertain as current funding is projected to decline over the next few years.

Sir Richard Feachem, KBE, FREng, DSc(Med), PhD, who was the founding Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and current Director of the UCSF Global Health Group, calls on the malaria community and donors to heed these results in order to continue the fight against malaria. "This work demonstrates the historical evidence on what happens when malaria control efforts and funding streams prematurely turn their attention away from malaria. This paradox of success needs greater attention to maximize our investments in malaria control and elimination."

Finding innovative ways to continue investing in successful malaria control and elimination programs is necessary to ensure that the dramatic progress in the fight against malaria is maintained and extended. Maintaining support for these programs will allow them to continue to save thousands of lives year after year.

CHAI applies the rigorous thinking, analysis, and urgency of the business world to save lives and strengthen health systems rapidly and more efficiently by improving markets for medicines and diagnostics, lowering the cost of treatment, and accelerating access to key drugs and technologies. As a trusted partner to governments, CHAI?s programs have helped more than four million people access treatment for HIV/AIDS at reduced costs, and have led to more than $1 billion in savings for developing countries. In addition to retaining its initial focus HIV/AIDS care and treatment, CHAI implements programs on vaccines, malaria, health systems strengthening, and maternal and child health in more than 25countries. As of January 1, 2010, CHAI became a separate nonprofit organization from the Clinton Foundation, with President Clinton serving as CHAI's Board Chair. Learn more at clintonhealthaccess.org.

Along with its network of global collaborators, the UCSF Global Health Group advocates for spatially progressive elimination - working inwards from the current geographic margins of the disease - as a complementary strategy to the significant investment in scaled-up malaria control in highly endemic countries, and research and development of new tools to eventually eradicate the disease. The Global Health Group works with a diverse network of partners to support regional and national elimination efforts in southern Africa and the Asia Pacific. Social Networking and Parenting

You must have heard about that St. Petersburg guy who fired a gun on his dad just because of a laptop argument. This goes to show how technology has changed many parent-children relationships for the worse. Let?s go back a couple of months to that North Carolina dad who gunned down his daughter?s laptop for the world to see. It probably still sends shivers to your spine, especially if you have kids who are always online or if you?re a kid who has parents who ?follow? you online.

It seems that the way parents discipline kids have changed as technology advances. Before, it would be embarrassing to even scold a kid in front of other people. Now, this dad showed how he can gun down his daughter?s laptop for the world to see. The daughter needs discipline, that can?t be denied as she had disrespected her parents for the world to see as well. It was disappointing to see however that a parent who knows better would step down to his daughter?s level ? a kid.

It was very impractical and rather an unwise thing to do. Especially with the fact that the father just spent money on a PC optimization tool, something like PC Speed Up, to upgrade his daughter?s computer. Then he ended up destroying the computer. Talk about a waste of money.
Some people blame social networking, particularly Facebook in events like this one. Social networking sites provide kids a way to let the world know about what?s happening in their lives, bar none. The word ?privacy? doesn?t exist in the world of social networking and video uploading sites like YouTube; everybody knows everybody?s business, even things that should be hidden behind closed doors like family matters and discipline issues for instance.

Social networking is not all bad though; some people say it actually helps strengthen family ties as it provides way to communicate with and update family and relatives with what?s happening in each other?s lives especially those who are miles apart.?Thus, it comes down to how technology is used and incorporated in the family. Technology is always updated for the better, there?s always a good purpose behind every inventions. Thus, it is a man?s sole discretion on how he or she makes use of this technology.

If you read all the comments on the video that the father posted on YouTube, you will see how only 8% of the comments expressed disappointment for the father and 92% praised the father for a ?job well done?. This spurred debates whether it is a good thing to use technology like YouTube and announce to the world that your family has a problem or not. It also stimulated arguments about using firearm to prove a point, as if just talking about it in public is not enough.

In this modern age, some people justify tough love as the best route to go, especially with problem kids who don?t only disrespect their parents at home but also for the whole world to know by posting it on his or her Facebook status. I think parents like me should think of creative and ?right? ways to show their kids that they?re doing something wrong. I believe gunning down a laptop and posting it in YouTube doesn?t have those aforementioned elements.

I remember hiding my son?s favorite toys (the ones that makes him ignore me and don?t listen to whatever I say) and make it reappear only when he?s ready to listen. I certainly don?t remember destroying my son?s toys, let alone shooting them in front of the world.

Image

Rumors and leaks have been flying fast and furious about Samsung's next handset to be graced with the Galaxy moniker, and we've just gotten one more tidbit. Other than the event invite Sammy sent out last week and a recent video teaser, official info on the handset's been hard to come by. However, Vodafone's just put up a page indicating the carrier will, indeed, get the new superphone and is letting you register for updates on its status. So, we now know at least one carrier that'll have the handset, the question is who else is in line to get the Galaxy?
