You must have heard about that St. Petersburg guy who fired a gun on his dad just because of a laptop argument. This goes to show how technology has changed many parent-children relationships for the worse. Let?s go back a couple of months to that North Carolina dad who gunned down his daughter?s laptop for the world to see. It probably still sends shivers to your spine, especially if you have kids who are always online or if you?re a kid who has parents who ?follow? you online.

It seems that the way parents discipline kids have changed as technology advances. Before, it would be embarrassing to even scold a kid in front of other people. Now, this dad showed how he can gun down his daughter?s laptop for the world to see. The daughter needs discipline, that can?t be denied as she had disrespected her parents for the world to see as well. It was disappointing to see however that a parent who knows better would step down to his daughter?s level ? a kid.

It was very impractical and rather an unwise thing to do. Especially with the fact that the father just spent money on a PC optimization tool, something like PC Speed Up, to upgrade his daughter?s computer. Then he ended up destroying the computer. Talk about a waste of money.
Some people blame social networking, particularly Facebook in events like this one. Social networking sites provide kids a way to let the world know about what?s happening in their lives, bar none. The word ?privacy? doesn?t exist in the world of social networking and video uploading sites like YouTube; everybody knows everybody?s business, even things that should be hidden behind closed doors like family matters and discipline issues for instance.

Social networking is not all bad though; some people say it actually helps strengthen family ties as it provides way to communicate with and update family and relatives with what?s happening in each other?s lives especially those who are miles apart.?Thus, it comes down to how technology is used and incorporated in the family. Technology is always updated for the better, there?s always a good purpose behind every inventions. Thus, it is a man?s sole discretion on how he or she makes use of this technology.

If you read all the comments on the video that the father posted on YouTube, you will see how only 8% of the comments expressed disappointment for the father and 92% praised the father for a ?job well done?. This spurred debates whether it is a good thing to use technology like YouTube and announce to the world that your family has a problem or not. It also stimulated arguments about using firearm to prove a point, as if just talking about it in public is not enough.

In this modern age, some people justify tough love as the best route to go, especially with problem kids who don?t only disrespect their parents at home but also for the whole world to know by posting it on his or her Facebook status. I think parents like me should think of creative and ?right? ways to show their kids that they?re doing something wrong. I believe gunning down a laptop and posting it in YouTube doesn?t have those aforementioned elements.

I remember hiding my son?s favorite toys (the ones that makes him ignore me and don?t listen to whatever I say) and make it reappear only when he?s ready to listen. I certainly don?t remember destroying my son?s toys, let alone shooting them in front of the world.
